Each to their own and all that, but I do reckon that the dash mats are a bit like a "cardigan" for the car. ie for old people!
What purpose does it serve exactly?What's the point.... it all comes out in the wash anyway!

Ok I get it so, instead of using McGuires Vinyl cleaner or something similar, you just cover up a good looking dash with carpet I suppose it saves the cleaning but you probably then have to vacuum it right
Seriously are you blokes worrying about the harsh Aussie conditions destroying the dash?
Oh and BTW CW, it can get hot in Melb too ya know..

you must have visited South Australia
mine has what looks like a bubble appearing and I have already had the steering wheel airbag replaced due to it curling at the top and its replacement is going the same way. easy to replace but the dash (which cops more sun than any other interior bit) would be a nightmare. and its a nice looking bit of carpet

OK now I see the extent of the problem as i too have replaced my steering wheel airbag cover due to vinyl peeling back. The new one seems to be doing the same thing, not to mention other bits of external trim that we've previously discussed.... and what makes it worse is that my car spends 5 days a week under cover deep in an underground car park!!
So about $50 for that nice bit of rug then What's the point.... it all comes out in the wash anyway!

Why not simply spend $15 on a reflective screen to pop inside the windscreen when you park in the open - which is surely when the damage is done to steering wheel and dash...mind you, Sydneysiders/NSWelshmen like a bit o'leopardskin, makes em feel.......furry ?

my dash mat is in place as needs no more intervention unlike the installing and removal and storing of a sunscreen (pain in the ) and I believe the sun still operates whilst I'm driving for hundreds of kms. if you could recomend one the sits in place, is large enough and wont fall down when it wilts in the heat is easy to install and remove and takes up virtually no space in the front (as grabbing it from the middle/rear is a pain in the rse) then I will consider it

Hi Cat,
I got mine from Autobarn; it is two connected square reflective panels that fold up easily and slip into the map pocket in the back of the front seat. Being squared off I think they fit pretty well.
Also, doesn't the current type of glass absorb more UV than before - if so, wonder how much damage in the past has been started by UV breakdown before heat effect.....?
Regarding the effect when driving, could always try leaving the reflective shade up.............. seriously though, just how hot does the dash get when the vehicle and ventilation systems are running - unless UV has been/is the main culpret?
