You need to be careful where you measure the oil pressure. The digital gauge shows the pressure and oil temp where the normal pressure switch housed. This is at the end of the oil gallery on the N/S head. The analog gauge is showing the pressure at the the oil pump after the pressure relief valve. Both these readings are at cold idle.
A 2 BAR differential is normal due to the normal loss of oil past bearings/lifters/spray jets......
When at operating temp the pump should idle at ~2 BAR and should rise 1 BAR per 1000rpm, but at the end of the oil gallery, you'll only get a 20% of that increase due to the viscosity of the oil decreasing.
At hot, the end of gallery pressure should be between 0.8 and 1.2 BAR. Anything less means you either have lots of leaks in the gallery, blockage in the filter or the beginning of the end for that engine.Joe

Well let me update you further, I have had the engine reconditioned, and so far so good. Two separate 100mile journeys so far, no issues.
I know most, if not everyone here is cautious and sceptical about this sort of service so let me be another guinea pig, and keep you up dated good or bad. Also had a recon turbo fitted at the same time.
My decision was based on smallest outlay to maintain status quo.

Well very best of luck with it, hope it proves a prudent decision. By the way do you know what exactly they reconditioned, and approximate cost?yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Valves, cam chains, piston rings, big end bearings, main bearings, engine block.
Should I pm you the price of post it?

I suppose to publish the prices may help others who find themselves at a similar crossroads.
My reasoning was that I could get 2500 from “we buy any car” for the car with the oil pressure problem and forget about it. I would then have to spend approx 7000 to get another d3, the history perhaps known and future reliabiity a further roll of the dice.
Whereas reconditioning the engine, whilst also another gamble allowed me to try and control the future of the vehicle. At 3500 it was cheap enough to make sense to me given the above. As mentioned earlier I also changed the turbo so hopefully have some longevity in the car now.

That's not a bad price if you consider a short block from JLR is around the same price, but you then have to do the work.
And, as well as swapping everything over there are the hidden costs plus labour if you can't do it yourself! There are many on here who will be very keen to see how you get on! What kind of warranty were you offered?yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

That was my thinking too, especially as in reality it’s value wouldn’t justify LR / new engine. It’s a six month warranty

Hi Cobra,
And very glad to read you got your disco back on the road.
Can I ask, did they tell you why you were having the persisting oil pressure issue; if they were able to figure it out.
Or, could they tell you what other damage had occurred that wasn’t originally repaired?
Kind of curious just how much damage a cam belt failure can cause in the best of circumstances.
Particularly relevant as mine is coming up to needing a timing belt in 2019, and it’s whether to get it done sooner rather than later in the year.

Thank you. Sorry I should have written that the bearings and block were found to be worn which was the cause of the pressure issue. The reason for this I do not know. The cam belt failure itself probably only caused the bent valves, and the reason for the belt coming off was due to the oil pump mounted tensioner breaking off, firing through the engine cover.
