To replace 5 glow plugs I paid a tad under £200. Was well chuffed after reading of the horror stories on here. Once you have defeated the idiots any job is half done. Pity there are so many idiots to defeat.

Surely the only function of the glow plugs is to enable cold starting. They do not come into play once the vehicle is running so how would they affect performance etc? Not such a Disco Newbie now!

there are on while the engine is running on the tdv6. I presume when its cold still!
Think they call it after burn or something 
Can't say I notice any difference

Not a lot more I can add to this post only the following.
Yes starting is a lot easier and I have got to believe the battery won’t be getting the guts torn out of it by continuously cranking to get the engine running.
Don’t really notice any change in running characteristics and that after doing about 700 miles last week on our holiday to Harris!
Only other thing re removal and the plugs just came out so smoothly is that Skagg and I were using injector cleaner. Don’t know if this was a contributing factor to the ease of removal. Once you have defeated the idiots any job is half done. Pity there are so many idiots to defeat.

(just posted below on another thread but thought worth putting up here. Although some v cheap prices on this thread my comment is in relation to indies and dealers requiring disclaimers for potential 3-4k of work!)
If its of help to anyone I just had my glow plugs replaced by Midland Diesel Solutions in Hinckley - speak with Pete or Jan
After getting wild prices from LR Indies and LR themselves - all preferring to avoid the job if at all possible I found these guys. They are well versed in this job and have all eventualities covered with a worst case price (if all snap) at a fraction of what the above quote (most seem to go straight to body off / head off situation if one snaps); all done in situ
On top of this they are also straight up chaps, as luck would have it they managed to get all of mine out without snapping one so my overall price was much reduced ! Happy days - I think this kind of service deserves a plug and it will be music to peoples ears if you are currently like I was; debating the future of my D3
And by the way, what Robbie says is spot on - the glow plugs make much more of a difference than just a cold start. The drive is like a different car - acceleration, low end pick up is a marked improvement

The body off, heads off and K's worth of bill only applies if the ends of non functioning glow plugs swell to a size that exceeds the diameter of the hole in which they reside. This means that when the plugs are extracted the swelling breaks off and falls into the cylinder. Not a good idea to have that going through the turbo

From my multiple enquiries to both LR dealers and a couple of indies it seems that most jump straight to body off head off scenario as soon as a plug just snaps. Although one good indie I use would only go to this stage if the tip dropped into the chamber as you say. Most are not interested in messing around
I think it depends on experience of this procedure and the specialist kit they either have or don't have
I can say that at midland diesel they have the vibrating tool to free them if poss / then drill bits and jig to extract/pull a broken sleeve - up to 3 times / then if they still have the bottom bit stuck in they will actually push the tip into the chamber (to allow purchase on the remaining bit of sleeve / then they have cameras etc to retrieve the tip apparently without having to take head off.
Mine didn't get to that stage but I was comfortable with the price if this was needed (well, much more comfortable knowing what all the others were quoting if it got to that stage that is). Cheers

Looks like Midland Diesel Services should be inundated with Forum members once the temperatures start to head south.
Having thought about it, the injector hole must be larger than the glow plug one, so I can't see why the broken part can't be pulled out of that hole using a keyhole video camera down the glow plug hole.
Still, I can't get my head around the initial costings of body off/heads off. I had one very well respected LR Indy refuse point blank to even do the glow plugs.

Resurrecting an old post here about glow plug removal for those who don't have the ability/time to attempt the job themselves.
Having resurrected my FBH last year when I found all six of my plugs were FUBAR and then having struggled with battery issues running the FBH when we had a cold snap at the end of last year I decided enough was enough and I decided to get them done this week by DR Automotive in Stone, Staffs.
They were very accommodating and knowledgeable regarding all the issues/risks which gave me confidence in their abilities, which turned out to be very well placed as they managed to get all six out and replaced with Beru/OEM in ~ 5 hours...result! (2 snapped but were able to be drilled/threaded & pulled successfully).
Not the cheapest job to say the least at £100/hr + parts + VAT but I would say you definitely get what you pay for with these guys and I would heartily recommend them to anyone needing the job doing.
(Not sure it made a difference but for the past year I have been adding Redex Diesel to every full tank and eack week for the last 6 weeks I'd managed to soak the top of each plug with Powerfoam Deep Creep) MY06 D3 SE 2.7 V6
