Is it worse with the Disco than other cars? SWMBO put petrol in my Dads brand new Golf. Car started coughing and spluttering and to cut a long story short tank was drained & refilled with diesel. Car was fine and sold 12 years and 100,000 miles later. Still see it driving around locally.

The reasons there are different views is simply because there are different diesel fuel systems, the modern common rail diesel will not tolerate petrol especially to the point where it stopped running itself, older non common rail engines are much more tolerant of carp fuel, hence people with veg oil/waste oil/dirty diesel get away with it, damage is still being done but the engine will still run, the cost will come later, with common rail it really is time to sell it asap.
The reason common rail wont tolerate the petrol is the tolerance are so fine and the pressures so high, as said above the petrol strips the lube off and the metal wears away causing chaos.
The van guys at work did lots of misfuels (council motors) new injectors, recon pump, drain/flush tank and they were nice easy 4 pots.

How old was the golf? and was it the 1.9 PD engine?

SWMBO stuck £20 in her 1.6 diesel MY10 golf.
After she realised what she done, I filled the rest of the tank with diesel. No problems going forward, it was a company car so i had nothing to lose.

It was an 05 plate 1.9

Are there any experiences of diesel engines going totally tits up after a petrol contamination?
I understand the theoretical problems but how often does it actually lead to damage and serious problems if you just flush out the system with diesel?
Just curious.

Personally, if it's running ok I would just carry on driving it. What's the worse that can happen? It stops and needs a new Hp pump, lift pump and injectors.
I don't know how long you intended to keep the car for, but I'd bet it would cost you a lot more to get rid of it and buy something else. And who's to say the car you buy to replace it hasn't been misfuelled back down the line, and sold on.

I did put a tenner 's worth of petrol in mine about 18 month's ago realised and then filled to brim with diesel and ran it for 12 months with no issues then sold it on but it was running fine Discovery 3 se gone

Bear in mind that the HP diesel pump pressurises the fuel to between 20,000 and 30,000 PSI (yes, really!), it’s not a system that you’d want to cut into and modify in any way!2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

It’s not to be recommended, but relatively small quantities of petrol will sit on top of the diesel in the tank and as long as you keep topping the car up, then the petrol will be kept away from the tank outlet. Keep this going for around 2,000 miles and the petrol will gradually mix into the diesel and pass through the system relatively harmlessly.
I don’t know how the OP seems to have got away with it so far, but I would still assume that the high pressure fuel pump, the filter, the pipes and seals, along with all six injectors might still be toast until a few thousand miles have passed.

Most likely a PD engine which runs unit injectors pressurised by the cam shaft, the injectors run at really high pressure but the rail that feeds them is only about 60psi unlike the 20 odd thousand psi of common rail jobbies.
I was told that common rail systems and Im not sure how true it is, as the pressures are so high there are no seals just amazingly tight tolerances?

Guy at work misfueled his 330d, drained it out and a few weeks later had starting issues due to injector leak off, sussed out which one was duff, changed that then another went down and so on, he gave up and got rid of it.
