Just aquired it an getting black smoke

Just acquired my 2006 D3 HSE. Done 127k. In general looks immaculate but I did notice black smoke when accelerating hard. I also have noticed an intermittent error come up:

This doesn't happen on every trip and maybe its a NOOB like me thinking it seems to come on when I have tried to replicate the black smoke i.e right foot hard on accelerator

I have also plugged on an ODB2 adaptor and used Torque Pro to check for at fault coded but there were none.

I have searched for explanations for the black smoke and seen 2 or 3 suggestions on here.

The car came from an approved RAC dealer and came with RAC Buysure warranty (think it's 3 months). The dealer is around 60 miles away from me and I haven't time to take it back to them. Is this black smoke thing something that should be covered under warranty and if so do I get in touch with RAC.

Any advice gratefully received

Check big intercooler hose isn't split, plus there will be codes, just your widget/reader can't see them. Try and find someone with an IID or Faultmate Pro that can read the. Not all faultcode readers were born equal. Thumbs Up

I had reduced power and black smoke with no codes logged a few weeks ago and it was an EGR valve that had failed.

Just inspected what I think is my intercooler hose (ok bare with me I aint no mechanic lol). I am assuming it is that big thick hose that runs into the plastic box at the front middlish of the engine and works its way down towards the driver side wheel arch and under the car. I told you not to laugh

Anyway removed a plastic panel under the car and checked the hose. Couldn't see or feel anything. The hose is wrapped in a tight rubber sheath just before each bend.

That sounds like the one heyho. It's held on by a jubilee clip top and bottom. Easy to pull out from the top. It's not easy to see the split unless you squeeze the hose sometimes. Another common one is a split intercooler which normally shows itself by dripping oil over the floor. Or bumper around the front.

Would people reckon that as the car comes with 3 months RAC Buysure warranty a problem like this 'should' be covered. I mean if it is the EGR valve I am looking at a hefty cost for replacement and even several hundred pounds if I get it blanked.

Do people reckon that as I acquired the vehicle with a potential fault like this (I say potential because it has to be confirmed) then I have the law behind me to get it fixed by the dealer?

"Black smoke" could be put down to the mileage but the engine fault message is a clear reason to take it back. Good job you caught a photo of it because, as we all know, these old girls do play silly Censored when you want to demonstrate a fault!

My paranoia is getting the better of me Very Happy

Just checked the service record book. It shows services at:

17,872 03/06/08
39,652 27/05/10
46,754 14/12/10
60,444 26/03/12
87.466 12/05/14*
102,541 29/05/15*
127,486 19/07/17

The two with an * don't have a dealers stamp and are saying they are from Overbrook Services

So I am not sure about the cambelt situation

Either, take it back to the dealer as any fault this soon into ownership is presumed to have been present at the time of sale, so is the dealers responsibility to fix. Or if the distance is an issue phone them and ask if you can take it elsewhere to be diagnosed and get them to confirm they will pay for the repair. Although they are under no obligation to do that they may agree to it.

Had the Discovery 3 scanned by an independent garage using a Solus Pro scanner. Three errors were reported:

P0402 - exhaust gas recirculation flow excessive detected

P0101 - mass or volume air flow - circuit range/performance

P0230 - manifold absolute pressure turbocharger/supercharger boost sensor a correlation

Does this link in with the black smoke/engine system fault error.
