I don't think the 'ugly' thing is sorted by simply moving the plate. There's something about the narrow proportions, height of the rear bumper, window etc. which all work together to make the whole look. A whole look not unlike the Scania Irizar PB 12.2

this also addresses the lack of rear passenger space compared to D4 .

It doesn't really have a rear bumper as such. It's all blended in and that's possibly one of the issues.
