Loud binding noise and shudder.....
Hello, so there is a weird sqreeching/binding noise that very occasionally comes from the rear of the car. You also get a shudder at the same time, sounds very similar to ABS kicking in. It has only happened 4-5 times in the last year, but when it happens it very loud.
When you depress the clutch, there is no more problems, but as you accelerate it gets quicker and louder. All the way until about 3rd gear and stops. It then drives absolutely fine, and seems to forget it had a problem.
What I have noticed is that it has only done this when Iv driven low speed over gravel, or pulling away. Always seems to be on dirt roads or gravel though.
When it occurs, you have to "drive through it", which sounds aweful, until out of low speed. The only other sign is if you try to accelerate hard from the spot, which I don't normally do, you will get a progressive shudder until up to speed.
Any help would be great

My guess would be epb shoes, perhaps binding slightly, or the shoe material can become detachedJoined the BMWX5 45e group

Hi Dave, my initial thoughts were brake related, it sounds like that. The only thing making me think otherwise is just how loud it is. How easy is it to get to the shoes to have a look?

Thanks for the feedback, when the noise and vibration has occurred I have not actually applied the parking brake?? Does this sound odd, or if the EPB is faulty could it still cause the problem without being selected?
Cheers

I make a point of always using it, even though it doesn't have to be. It can become stiff and it may just catch on the odd occasion. Look at posts by Bodsy and get his brake bible out, shows you how to clean and inspect it. It is a little more difficult than some as you need to remove the rear discs, but is doable with a little mechanical knowledge.
Certainly the place to start if only to eliminate itJoined the BMWX5 45e group

So I've done some further investigation...I put the car into rock crawl mode and drove it around a gravel driveway. The front differential was constantly locking up and flashing orange in the 4x4 screen. This was exactly the same sensation I was getting randomly before.
My rear diff was not locking so I'm guessing it dosnt have locking rear diff?? Does this mean the front differential have gone or going or something else making it lock up?
Any ideas would be great thanks

If you put it in to rock crawl mode that will lock the diffs, and you will get the symptoms you described. For that I politely suggest reading the manual.
For the initial symptom reported, I also suspect EPB shoes, used or not, applied or not. I had these exact symptoms and it eventually transpired that it was all caused by a corroded retaining in mening that the shoes were just resting in the hub.
If it is the shoes then swift action saves money in the long run. I was too late looking to mine and the hand brake cable had chaffed such that it failed shortly after I replaced the failed components.

Hi, yes I agree I will start with the brakes and go from there. I know that rock crawl mode locks the doffs but I'm just trying to understand if there may be a fault with the diff as it appears to be locking up in normal operation. I wondered if there was another thing that could cause the diff
To lock up and cause this to happen?
Thanks for the help

Have you got the rear locking diff? as i had ver similar symptoms and it turned out to be the actuator on the diff needed replacing? worth a check.

Hocks172 I'm not sure if mine has a locking rear dif or not, how is the easiest way to find out? Also when your actuator was replaced was it just the actuator or the whole differential?
Cheers

It was just the actuator still quite expensive I think £385+vat +fitting, as to checking apparently there is a wire going into the diff looking through one of the wheel arches, I noticed through there being a second padlock symbol on the 4x4 screen.
