D5- my wish list of D4 shortfalls to be addressed

So great car that the D4 is, it has a few niggles that I would like to see improved on the D5.

No particular order of relevance, except no1. Thumbs Up

1: To be able to drive through a puddle without an avalanche of water hitting the windscreen and obscuring your view. Yes could drive much slower but when the wifes Swift can cope with much deeper puddles at sensible speeds and still not throw all the water onto your screen, surley we can expect a true 4x4 to cope with handling such hazards.

2; Improved heating or routing of windscreen washer pipes. Even with nozzle heaters and a fair strength mix in does not take much for the nozzles to freeze up. Once again Suzuki Swift even without heated nozzles has never once frozen up in winter conditions.

3:More usable storage in front and side of driver, something that has been reduced over subsequent Discovery models.

4:Thinner front roof struts, quiet fat on D4 and can hide a whole vehicle approaching if not careful.

5;The ability to hold Off road height at a higher speed (45mph?)

6;Improved navigation system.

7:Washer for rear camera.

8; Larger profile tyres in 19 and 20 inch sizes 19 x 60 and 20 x 55, Previous size now fitted to sport and looks better as well as being more functional.

9: Less wind noise when windows open and no horrible buffeting noises when only rear windows open.

10: Rear netting or perhaps plastic storage holders above front of rear passengers, like D1 D2 had. (Handy map storage)

11: rear storage bins like D1 and D2 again

12: 5 seat option so space could be better utilized in back. Perhaps false floor like in old Sport.

13:Fitted inclinometer.

14: Intergrated into grill driving light option

15: Slightly more second row footroom.

16:A real dipstick

17: A real gear stick

18: Larger info / stat nav screen

19: fold out seat option that can used to sit in rear of load area facing outwards, like so:

20: More resilient paintwork.

21: Better rear view when middle rear headrest in situ or folding middle headrest.

22: Dual battery option.

23: To be able to listen to radio / watch Tv for at least 30 mins with engine off, without risk of flat battery.

24: Run / view videos through fitted car screens from tablet or phone, just like audio

25: At least one permanent live socket probably in rear

26: Bigger fuel tank used to be 95 litres on D2 which gave 500 miles plus

27: Hard load space cover option, something similar to full fat.

28: Proper secure locking towbar.

29: Proper spare wheel theft protection

30: Proper safe and sturdy bottle jack

I've only one - PRICE. Rolling Eyes

Just my opinion. Why would you want to,

5. Hold off road height at 45mph plus? Seems excessive.
7. Washer for rear camera? It's going to get filthy no matter what you do.
13. An inclinometer is a complete WOT. I go by eyesight.
14. Never been one for adding unnecessary lights.
17. A real gear stick? I just wouldn't buy one with that retro type thing.
19. The fold out rear boot seat looks absolutely hideous.
24. Wouldn't want to run videos at all, never mind via rear screen on your iPhone.

By the OP "D5- my wish list of D4 shortfalls to be addressed"

Well here in Aus we have some issues that we hoped would have been addressed in the D5

1. Tyres, Tyres and Tyres. !9" tyres as the smallest option the the D4 is a major issue. No other proper 4wd uses them meaning they are unavailable outside the major cities. All the other 4wds (LC200, Prado, Jeep etc have option of 17" which are more suitable for outback touring. and are more readily available.

2. Tow Hitch. How is it possible to make such a basic, simple piece of equipment so bloody complicated and prone to failure as to make it unsuitable for its intended purpose beggers belief.

3. As has been mentioned by OP the lowering of the suspension at 50KpH is a pain as many unmade roads can be driven at 70-80 kph but the raised height is need to clear the hump in the middle of the track. (when you need to cover 600 to 700 km in a day, 40 kph doesnt cut it).

4. Size of Fuel tank. At about 82 Litres usable is simple too small for our distances, especially when towing a 2.5 ton van. I can get 90 litres in my D1 tank. The Toymotas in Aus have 130 litres plus.

These would be the most complained about issues for the D3/D4 in Australia.

What this has done is create an industry to address these shortcomings.
Such as after market rims (18"), Mitch Hitch to fix the Land Rover hitch (known as the plough).
LLAMS for adjusting ride height and long range tanks (80-100 litres).

I was hoping these items may have been addressed in the D5 but I fear not. Ma y have to look at Toymotas.

Air suspension set up for rutted roads ....

Land Rover’s four-corner air suspension system not only improves ride quality when driving on-road but also provides greater capability when off-roading.

With its two-stage off-road mode the automatic system is able to vary between two ride heights of +40mm and +75mm. At speeds below 50km/h (31mph) the +75mm setting is available and for faster speeds on rutted dirt roads, between 50-80km/h (31-50mph), the vehicle will operate at +40mm. In addition, the new Speed Lowering function cuts drag and enhances fuel economy by automatically reducing the ride height by 13mm at cruising speeds above 105km/h (65mph).

Other functions include enhanced tuning to prevent the suspension from lowering in deep wading conditions, as well as preventing belly-out situations where the centre of the vehicle rests on the ground.

Looking at the manual's preferred sizes for winter tyres I believe they have.

I see a few people are wishing for more functionality in the 'Off Road' department, especially those who use them in more testing terrains.

But as most D5's will be used by the 'the school run brigade' mainly residing in Chelsea, I think the chances of LR investing more money in it's off road ability are quite slim Whistle
