Never mind my FBH worries - Its now broken down !
Hi,
I was worried about my FBH control unit not working but now I've bigger problems.
Driving along just after lunch about 40mph, normal temperature etc all fine and the was a very (very) slight 'lurch' and it lit up like a Christmas tree, engine dead
Coasted to a stop in a side road off the main road.
Open bonnet - had a look, nothing obvious - pulleys etc all seem to be there.
turns over sweetly (possibly too quickly I think?), no clanking or bad noises but no firing, oil still there water still there, no mess on the road, looked at where it happened, nothing on the road.
So have a friendly LR tech, he's come out and helped me recover it to be taken to his (indie) work place on Monday.
What could it be ?
Sounds expensive to me, had it three months, took time to buy it - all usual checks done - timing belts done @ 107K by a reputable indie (got the receipt) good service record now at 120K.
Got a warranty but as ever not sure how well that will work - we shall see.
I'm guessing an internal failure of one of the belts either timing or other such as it doesn't strike me there is any compression (hence its spinning faster) - I've blown up engines big time before and it didn't quite seem like that to me but......
Time will tell..........

Oil pump case broken I'm afraid.... when there is no tension on the timing belt, it spins very quickly... I've been there......
The warranty should pay out, just don't tell them that it's a known fault or they'll wriggle out of it.Bodsys Brake Bible

Did wonder and had decided to get it checked and changed if not, the road to hell is paved with good intentions
I guess lets see when its in the shop and I'll be onto warranty company first thing on Monday to see what the situation is about checking it and getting it fixed.
Thankfully not our main mode of transport
So come on guys whats going to be the damage at independent rates?
- suppose it depends if i can find a recon / 2nd hand engine or can you rebuild ? I guess it depends on the damage doesn't it ?

thousands...
do a search - if Bodsy's right then, when the belts were done they should have replaced the oil at same time. Yours is a 2007 model where there was a weakness in the oil pump casing which is exposed when the belts are changed... Don't expect the bill to be small
Hopefully the warranty will help with some if not all of it.
Assuming the worst, where would anyone suggest get a recon engine / replacement from that's reliable in the near(ish) vicinity of the east midlands ?
All a little stunning really especially as I was really cautious with the purchase, eye's open and all that, just poor ing luck I suppose
Will be "interesting" to see if it the classic oil pump failure or not.
If not what else might cause it - cam belt failure (this was replaced on time but you never know) - is there something else that could snap / fail and cause this......

Warranty First is the company, looks like a fairly small outfit compared to others
I'll follow their claim procedure and see what happens.
Read the book and certainly covers this sort of thing !!!
Previously had fairly good service with warranty companies but no used or heard of this one so we shall see......

Gone in for diagnosis at Fox Landrover, Market Bosworth, and have started the warranty process, Fox have been really great in helping.
They've started to look and so might well know later today what happened, but assuming its either the oil pump or cam belt
The belts (front and rear) were changed at 106K so will be disappointed if its that, checking the invoice for that work cant see any oil pump so that my "favourite" at the moment , this was done prior to my ownership As previous this was to be checked - perhaps another warning to others - not worth the risk but lets see what it is.

bought through the trade or privately? - makes a huge difference as to where you can go next
If you bought through the trader and as you have had the vehicle less than 6 months the trader will have to prove that the fault wasn`t present when you bought the car - it is not up to you to prove that it was - if bought privately however you will have to cross your fingers that the warranty comes good

Was bought through the trade and is less than 6 months ago.
Not thought of that route, but will consider it although not entirely sure how to do it !
Lets see what the problem is.

So far they have been pleasant, clear and quick in response so all good, but the real test will be when we start to talk turkey about fixing it.
Which level of cover did you get (PM if you wish too) I'd be interested to know.
