Some say D5 is better off road & Rugged as last generation D4's this video seems to suggest this.

It's all so simple eh chaps Laughing

They don't really care about the lost revenue ...they needed to halt D4 production in order to ready the line ...it's all part of the strategy. If you want to understand the scale of the undertaking...go visit Thumbs Up

I'm confused given how many here have pure capitalist views and yet it seems that when it comes to the Land Rover making money this entirely secondary to protecting your rights to grow beards and wear fatigues Rolling with laughter

Re orders: my dealers told me reason for "good price" for my D4 is that "almost certain" D5 2017 production run sold as of now.

Back to my point earlier that they could still sell D4's without cannibalising D5 sales (and if stories are true perhaps relieve the transition bottleneck) plus a lower more practical spec (I think I mentioned on another thread, became a cloth v leather debate!) D4 would also sell by the bucketload. And as Jeep have proved older but more traditional models still sell and make money.

A basic spec D4 auto with say cloth seats (don't start about leather again!), satnav, black interior, including say load guard and optional off road bits like sump guard etc would be a surefire seller to ease the D5 transition and offer something practical pending the new Defender.

I'd see a 3 model range - exactly what you've described, with the Graphite and the Landmark carrying on as well. A few manufacturers have done this before, with Volvo springing to mind first; in the old days of having a staple saloon and estate car, the old one would carry on alongside the new, with the name "Classic" tagged on. They would sell very happily alongside one another.

Unfortunately, I can't see it happening - the production line's been broken up.

I wonder how much halting a production line would cost per 24hours ?

Still if they could flog a few cheap spec D4's is would make sense

Eh? Been done by plenty of other manufacturers before to maximise sales and profits, and was done with the RR Classic when it was retired. Clearly not possible if the line has been closed down. Basic product lifecycle to maximise profits.

Who needs to shut the line? At Halewood they made Freelanders and Jags on the same production line. Anything is possible if you have competent engineers, although after that interview....

I would suspect that LR will be only too happy to get rid of the last steel unibody and separate chassis production line in Solihull and are only too happy to standardise on aluminium unibodies there. I would imagine that even a stripped out D4 would now be more costly to build than a mid range D5.

Not when you take into account the huge development and tooling costs sunk into the D5 and attriburted to each car made. And the marketing costs on each one.

The materials and production line time is only part of the D5 cost. The D3/D4 development costs are already accounted for so its just actual costs. Still potentially profitable, subject to lots of other provisos.

If being modern and up to date means "looks like everything else" then you can keep it I'm afraid, I like that the D3 and 4, and even 1and 2 are instantly recognisable from everything else out there.

You've obviously confused Defender drivers with Discovery owners. Quite hard to do, but you've managed it.

What is in fact happening is a mini-grieving cycle as people lose something that was important to them. Both in terms of the D3/4 but also for the 'dinosaurs' like myself the realisation that Land Rover is now just mass market car manufacturer turning out focus group led generic jelly mould stuff. The days of its products defining or creating a sector, being exhibited at the Louvre, being one of the most iconic outlines on the planet or being the epitome of form following function appear dead. Time to grieve and move on.

You are right about the grieving.

My observation on the beards and fatigues is metaphorical of course....but I suspect that a corner exists Laughing
