High speed droning/rumbling noise from the front-SOLVED |
|
Hello,
I have been reading most threads about diffs and wheel bearings but I am still confused... My car has developed a droning noise when driving at or over 120 km/h. It is speed related (not revs) and it doesn´t matter if the car is under load or if I put it in neutral/let off the gas. The sound is similar to the sound you can get from a roof rack at high speed. Sound is coming from the front and has appeared just recently. Car is at 160.000 miles and front wheel bearings have been changed earlier. Left at 134.000 miles (Timken) and right at 56.000 miles (genuine). There are no play in the bearings. Oil in front diff was changed at 119.000 miles. Old looked good then and no metal debris at that time. Will change it again to see how it looks now. Car had a 4 wheel alignment two weeks ago. Noise was not present Before but that might be a coincident. Tyres are half worn Pirelli Scorpion ATR:s with no obvious faults. I will try to change place front to rear. No bad behaviour from the autobox and oil was changed 2 months ago. When the droning occurs I think I can feel a slight vibration in the steering wheel but it can be my imagination...
As I am mostly not driving at or above 120 km/h I could just wait until it gets worse and maybe obvious but holidays are coming up and I don´t want to be stuck far from home with a serious problem.
Ideas?

It's almost certainly one of the front wheel bearings they have a lot more to do and weight to carry than the rears, 80,000 is exceptional for them often a lot less.

Typical ATR tyre drone, change wheels diagonally and see if it makes any difference. Rub the palm of your hands over the tread to feel for any directional steps in the tread. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Can´t feel anything strange with my hand but will try to move tyres around. Front right wheel bearing might be on the to do list now.

I have moved tyres around and noise still persists so bearing it is. Steve just got an order for a Timken bearing that goes on the right front.
I´ll report back when it is changed.

I have now changed the right wheel bearing for a Timken one and noise is still there... I don´t believe it is the other side wheel bearing as it has only done 24.000 miles and is a Timken also. Moving tyres around didn´t help. Other suggestions? Diff? It doesn´t really sound like the diff noise I have read about here...

Cheap way to eliminate the near side bearing is to change it for the one you have taken off It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

The old hub needed some "convincing" to cooperate so considering the amount of force involved I don´t think I want to fit it again... I have no change in noise when turning either way so CV-joints seem unlikely. Will check the prop shaft as well and also change oil in the diff and maybe add some Lucas additive in it. I get the sound at 120-140 km/h and it comes as flipping a switch so if I can´t find the cause I will just continue driving until it gets worse and hopefully it will be obvious where it comes from. At normal speed I can´t hear anything at the moment. One other solution would be to turn up the radio

Me and the wife has now been listening to this noise for some time and it is clearly worse in headwind. It seems to origin from the area around the windscreen. I have ruled out the wipers. Could the windscreen cause this? It was changed maybe a year ago.

Hi Peter.
When You got the windscreen exchanged, they might have
reused the clips on the A-pillarcovers...
When changing windscreen, I have heard from
"reliable sources" (this forum), that You shall always
get new clips, since the covers can "drone/vibrate"
if the clips are recycled...
Hopefully, this might be the cause.....
And, by the way, it was a nice sundayafternoon
we had in Lunda..

Hi Uffe,
Yes, they did reuse the old clips when the screen was changed. I noticed this because I got water where it shouldn´t be. I have since then changed the clips myself so I know they are new and shiny. Nevertheless when checking the trim I can´t help thinking they feel a bit "loose". I might change the clips and the trims just to be sure.
Thanks,

This sounds something similar to what I have in a D4 - a vibrating buzz type noise. I have a had a noisy wheel bearing and both lower arms changed which has had no impact, have swapped around the GG AT's with no impact and swapped them with new ATR's with no impact. I have taped up exterior trim joins, removed trim, removed the drivers door card, removed a lot of the dash and still cant find what causes it. I *think* it is triggered/gets worse by poor road surfaces. What did stop it for a while was when the new tyres were fitted, the alignment couldn't be done for a few days after. The noise was still there in between times so that eliminates tyres IMO but once aligned, it stopped. though has since restarted, but not as bad. I called the technician up to ask what he had done to try and determine what parts might be causing it. He did mention that he undid the lower steering column bolt to try and see if he could straighten the steering wheel slightly. I have read here that steering column UJ's can play up so im wondering if its possible that some vibration is being transmitted through this.

ive recently changed both front bearings
I was convinced it was off side, but after changing there was no difference
it was actually the nearside that had failed and after changing it the noise went
sound travels in mysterious ways ....................................................................................................
