Quick advice on sinking suspension

Hi Guys - I'd appreciate some quick opinions on next steps for my diagnostics. I appreciate that these are common issues and I have found other posts on the matter but i can't make up my mind where to go next.

Symptoms are that left overnight the front seems to sink - I left the car at Gatwick for a week and it was pretty much on the stops all round.

When I remove Fuse 26 the car drops (in 10 hours):

FL 35mm
FR 38mm
RL 15mm
RR 10mm

(the driveway isn't level by any means)

I was expecting to have an issue at the front so I was surprised to lose any height at the back - is my problem 'all round' or just at the front because the sinking at the rear is 'normal? I appreciate my next step is with a bottle of soapy water but can I focus nearer the front or is it not that clear cut?

Thanks in advance!
Humphrey

i had very similar symptoms, http://disco4.com/forum/topic145265.html

if left long enough the back will drop too, changing the front valve block fixed it.

So I've been all round the front air pipes and the reservoir with my soap solution and I can't find any leaks. I've had the front valve block off, opened it up and 'cleaned' it but it wasn't very dusty and there was nothing to see really. I removed all the plungers and reseated the seals but didn't lube anything.

Sine I last posted, as swell as the overnight sinkingI've been getting the amber warning and code, "Pressure not rising quickly enough". I notice the gallery pressure drops very fast. Pressure maxes out at 1500kPa and then when the fault is recorded it drops to 250kPa in a matter of half a minute. Is this normal?

Without any evidence I'm loathe to just replace the FVB but unless anyone can suggest anything else then I suppose it's trial and error?

Has anyone had to replace the Reservoir Valve block? Presumably that might also give similar problems? What other diagnostics can I perform? I can hear the click of the Front Crosslink Valve when I trigger it in IIDTool so I'm assuming that's working fine. Is there anything I can do with the IIDTool to further my diagnostics?

Thanks for replying, I have done that recently but being out of calibration doesn't explain the dropping overnight does it (F26 removed)?

Gallery pressure dropping sounds pretty normal but the max pressure sounds low. Have a read of this thread http://disco3.co.uk/forum/topic121291.html.

Do a search for kpa and you'll find a few others related to gallery pressures.

The other thing I've seen mentioned is damage to the pipes near the front valve block - presumably from a stone or other object being thrown up.

Thanks Mike,

The Front Valve Block rebuild I did yesterday seems to have solved the dropping issue - it held up over night!! Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I'll have to wait to see when I drive it today if the pressure fault code is also now solved or if I have a second issue!

Thanks, I have read extensively but so often it depends on the search terms one uses!

I'd be really interested in hearing how this turned out for you after a few days as I think I have a similar issue.

No problem, will do. Mixed emotions today! The car hasn't dropped all day which is definitely a change for the better. To prove it, I've pulled F26 and have taken measurements, I'll compare those to my originals in the morning.

On the other side, on my short drive to the tip this afternoon, I got the amber warning back - pressure rising too slowly. The gallery pressure really struggles to rise beyond 1460kPa today before the bong. I would have investigated further but I'm feeling a bit broken after front discs, pads and flexihoses plus FVB rebuild yesterday. Major suspect has to be the air dryer crack issue but that will have to wait for another day. I suspect I have two problems but the timing is just coincidental.

I've had 10 years and 170k out of the original compressor so not bad I suppose....

Hi hgrimmet,

Would be interesting to know how you re built the FVB

Cheers Jerry

There's a how-to on here by Bodsy but really it's very easy.

http://disco3.co.uk/forum/topic133008.html...alve+block

Expose it on the backside of the crash bar on the Driver's side (RHD) by removing the front clips of the wheelarch liner and holding it back with a bungee (remove front wheel).

Unplug the electrical connector.
Unscrew, slightly, the 3 voss connectors, initially to release air pressure, then to remove the pipes.
Remove the Block by pushing it up on the crashbar within the eccentric holes of its mounting.
Once on the bench, you can unscrew the 4 screws holding the two halves of the block together, then pull the two halves apart.
You're faced with the three solenoid stems which, one by one, you can remove, blow into the recess and generally clear of white dust.
To refit ensure all the seals are correctly seated and put halves together and screw back together.
Replacement is the reverse of removal! Thumbs Up

More mixed emotions!!

Having pulled F26 to prove my FVB rebuild was successful these are my overnight results:

FL +/- 0
FR +/- 0
RL -15mm
RR -10mm

So the front dropping problem is solved, the rear is consistently dropping, apparently independently I think, so perhaps a RVB rebuild is required? Meanwhile the amber warning persists...

I think I have multiple issues, I'll just have to work through them one by one. My strategy will be to work from the peripheral valve blocks to the reservoir valve block to exclude them before tackling the compressor. But I don't think i'll be able to resist checking for the air dryer crack first.

So yesterday I had a 'live values' IIDTool session to check what was doing what and when and also to check gallery pressures during operation.

As expected the suspension rises and drops as expected and the two rear corner valves and two front valves appear to open as and when they should as does the reservoir valve although I accept that the live value is the signal sent to the valve not it's actual operation.

The front however is very slow to rise; the corber valves are open for minutes to complete the operation during whcih the compressor reaches 130degC. The rear is faster but the gallery pressure during these manoeuvres never gets above 1100kPa which I think is really low.

When the compressor stops the gallery pressure drops very, very quickly. I'm pretty sure I have a leak but it's too fast to be 'beyond' the valve blocks as the suspension doesn't drop much overnight. So, I've ordered a new tank and a compressor refurb kit because I only have the weekends to work and I can't order any parts over the weekend. My approach is to buy in some stock and send back what I don't need. (Sorry Steve (aka Boringoldgit)).
