Thanks very much for doing that Mikey, provides some reassurance. Got her recovered to my lockup today so made a start getting her on the ramp. I'm going to document anything of interest as I go. I think the first job is to get the starter off and get her timed up. Put on oil pump tension T belt then give her a turn by hand, if nothing too nasty then using the starter. After confirming bottom end ok (sure it is) I'll look to the heads and replace any damaged components, if happy, it's gaskets then new oil pump and timing belt kit, back together then fingers crossed!

I wouldn't try and start it
Time up the bottom end as appropriate, remove the cam covers, and replace any broken rockers before trying to start it My D3 Build Thread

Yes definitiely not trying to start it!! Going to use starter just for bottom end assessement purposes to see if it's worth the work of stripping the top down if that all that's wrong. If the bottom end is also screwed then I will just have to renew the engine or scrap it. Planning on removing the electrics from the injectors to prevent it firing. If I am making any fundamental incorrect assumptions please let me know!!!

Ok,
So two further questions....
1. What is the VIN range of failures ?
2. How would I know if I have good / bad start up pressure as highlighted by the previous poster ?
Cheers
Are early 2007s in the VIN# range?
Thank you!

Progress, Finally!
I'm really not sure on the VIN range maybe somebody else on here can help.
Now then, I lifted the body off last night, as you can see it's taken ages as I have stored it while I cleared other projects, but I am on it now and will have this sorted soon. I will keep you posted! Many thanks to Disco Mikey for the body lift guide, an excellent guide that with a few common sense extra bits of work has permitted the lift.
