Discovery Commercial Speed Limits

What is the definitive answer on speed limits in the UK for Disco Commercial?

Have any commercial owners been caught out?

Can't speak for the Disco but a good friend was caught in a VW Transporter van that had been converted to a caravanette. I think it depends what details are in the V5

It depends if it's classed as car derived, also the Disco is over 2 ton. We have a Transit Connect at work a have been told that it must comply with the light commercial vehicles speed limits.

My take is that if it's classed on the V5/with the DVLA as a car (as mine is) then I'll go at the limits for other cars.

But technically it is a van, so if I did happen to get a ticket for 70 on a dual carriageway then I'd take it on the chin.
(or appeal, I'm not sure now actually!) Confused

The question is do many people in general get prosecuted for exceeding the lower speed limits for commercials and buses. We do a 54 mile round trip commute on single carriage way roads and it is very rare to see even HGVs doing 50mph and more often than not at 65 you can still get overtaken by white van man!

Seems normal for heavy goods vehicles to drive on country lanes hard against their limiter. Seeing them go past fixed speed cameras whilst breaking their respective speed limit also irks me.

I did many years ago. 70ish on a dual carriageway in a VW Transporter. Didn't now about different limits for vans despite working for various companies in similar vans over previous years.

Cops who stopped me weren't too sure either!

surely, if you can drive a given vehicle on a normal car licence, normal car rules apply. If a vehicle is so different to the norm, perhaps a half days course and the requisite stamp in the licence is in order.

Except for me of course Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

It cannot be that hard for DVLC to send a notification to van drivers (owners) making the situation clear, so we are not left guessing. I bet most van drivers have no idea about the different speed limits.

I've been driving vans for 14 years and had no idea there was a different speed limit Shocked

How is someone meant to actually know this having never been told?

Slightly off topic but as HGVs have been mentioned above - many people are not aware the speed limits for HGVs were increased last year. Now 50 mph on single carriageways and 60 on dual carriageways

Thumbs Up

I am reasonably confident that the Highway Code was mentioned once or twice when you learned how to drive.

SWMBO got 3 points and a fine for 69mph on a derestricted dual carriageway in a 2.5 tonne Iveco Daily van and guess what - it was apparently my fault for not telling her about the lower speed limits for vans. Rolling Eyes
