Yep, one reference the other but read more carefully as the top-level document says dual use and car-derived can travel at the higher speed but the linked reference says the higher speed only applies to car-derived.

Meanwhile some police forces nicking people for traveling at the higher speed have been using the type approval as the demarcation. If the type approval is N1 then the lower limits have been applied.

Confusing and perhaps more so for the D3 commercial. The N1 label brings with some tax advantages but even adding a rear ladder impacts the vehicle certification and some hoops have to be jumped through, even on the simplified scheme:

Of course, many a commercial owner on here has modified their vehicle beyond the type approval limits....

Where does it say the higher limits don't apply to Dual Purpose vehicles?

It says CDV's are the only Goods Vehicles allowed to travel at car limits, but a DPV isn't a goods vehicle.

Confused

It gives separate and distinct definitions of what is a car-derived vans and what is a dual-use vehicle and, at the top of the page, says:

Quote:
Car-derived vans are the only goods vehicles which are subject to the same speed limits as a car.

If the type approval is N1 then there is no doubt that a dual purpose vehicle is a goods vehicle.

Actually the list of car-derived vans is so small some official sites list them and mention the oddballs that do not meet the requirements (eg Berlingo).

Ford Fiesta van
Vauxhall Corsa van
Fiat Punto van
Peugeot 207 van
Renault Clio van

Back to the D3/D4 commercial with a N1 type approval and a weight above the limits puts it firmly in the lower speed limit category.

Thumbs Up

Yes, but, a dual purpose vehicle is designed for the carriage of goods and people, hence the dual purpose classification and listing in the speed limits information.

Hey I'm the guy saying it is complicated and that the gov info is contradictory and often wrong. I am not saying to use any of it as gospel - precisely the opposit in fact.

So why do the separate and different definitions for car-derived vans and dual-purpose matter when it comes to speed?

Well when it come to the actual law only car-derived vans get the exemption to drive at the higher limits but dual-purpose vehicles do get to drive at the upper limit when towing a trailer.

Quote:
(1) A goods vehicle having a maximum laden weight not exceeding 7·5 tonnes and which is not—(a) an articulated vehicle, or(b) drawing a trailer, or(c) a car-derived van - 70/60/50

Quote:
A passenger vehicle, motor caravan, car-derived van or dual-purpose vehicle drawing one trailer - 60/60/50

Thumbs Up

http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1984/27/schedule/6?view=plain

As with many summaries on the gov website the editing (to make it more concise and easier to read) often obfuscates or misquotes the law.

Oops I seem to have opened a can of worms there Sad

Was only curious as there are loads going about that never get used for work.

As for the disco drive it like a car then if you get stopped say you never sit in the back so didn't notice that the seats were missing Whistle
Or buy a normal one and leave the seats down all the time to cart stuff around Thumbs Up

Confusion reigns it seems. I am unsure why it doesnt fall into the category of a car (4x4) derived van. They Re built as such and then stripped out. How much more derived do you need to get!?

Because it not only needs to be derived from a car but also weigh less than 2 ton laden!
