After another reset, more disc cleaning and maybe some swearing I've now got some life out of my sat nav! I'm now getting the map and 'enter destination' message when starting up and the map tracks my location for a minute or so until I get the 'Map DVD read error' message.
This suggests to my inexperienced mind that the previous drive knackered the discs and this new drive is doing its best to read what it can from the discs.
Does this make sense to anyone else...?! Previously owned an '08 D3 HSE in Stornoway grey but jumped ship to see what the Swedes have to offer.

Does it stay on when the car is stationary and then map dvd error when you are moving if it does then you may have a loose connection or what you have cleaned the disc may have damaged the disc Discovery 3 se gone

Hi Geoff.
The 'read' error appears when I'm stationary or moving - it's not fussy!
The new unit is definitely reading the disc in some capacity - the map moves to reflect my position then the arrow freezes and the 'read' error pops up shortly after.
I'm going to try and make copies of the discs I've got - I just hope they're not too far gone! Previously owned an '08 D3 HSE in Stornoway grey but jumped ship to see what the Swedes have to offer.

I'm not counting my chickens by any stretch but I got my discs (original 07/08 and 2 aftermarket specials) repaired at a Game store today - 3 for £5 - and all 3 now look brand new, no scratches visible to the naked eye anyway.
I inserted an aftermarket one before I left Sutton and got the 'read' error but it disappeared almost immediately (rather than staying for minutes on end) and this happened 3/4 more times in the 20 minute journey home. Close but no banana...
Slapped in the other aftermarket disc at home and - during a 10 minute ride around anyway - it was absolutely fault-free! It's too early to say it's sorted for definite but I plotted a journey, changed the route preferences and messed about with a few other settings (after changing from Belgium to UK obvs) so it's a good start.
Fingers crossed... Previously owned an '08 D3 HSE in Stornoway grey but jumped ship to see what the Swedes have to offer.

Where's that fingers crossed icon when you need it!
Hope it's sorted Arthur.

Cheers Geoff, Harvey...it's been doing my head in for a while now so I've got a lot more than just fingers crossed! Previously owned an '08 D3 HSE in Stornoway grey but jumped ship to see what the Swedes have to offer.

In my experiences with DVD players, disk cleaning will improve reading, invariable I've found its the optics that need cleaning to resolve the read error. Sometimes getting to the optics takes time to dismantle the unit, especially multi changers. Once there, cleaning with propanol using a soft bud will bring it back to new. You do have to be very carful as the optics are extremily sensitive.
Dismantling the unit. There are usually step by step guides which can be found which helps. I would admit it's not for the faint hearted, if you not used to complex small assembly's.
Hope that helps.

Cheers John.
I didn't dare venture into the inside of the ROM drive, I just took Geoff's advice and bought a replacement unit from Opuradio and swapped them out.
The location of the sat nav drive must have been an after-thought - why on earth would you put a drive with an open slot underneath a seat?!? I think it was years of accumulated grot that built up in the old drive and knackered the discs so - hopefully - the new drive will prove to be the solution.
The Neanderthal in me wants to stick a strip of duck tape over the slot to prevent the same thing happening again...
...but I've a feeling that someone with technical knowledge will tell me that the slot acts as some sort of a vent too. Anyone...? Previously owned an '08 D3 HSE in Stornoway grey but jumped ship to see what the Swedes have to offer.

No doubt there are other holes in the casing for that.
Seems silly to me that the electronics in a vehicle that can be driven in deep water arn't located in the roof

I would have thought so too but I don't want to screw up the new unit by blocking the slot when I shouldn't be...
I hadn't even considered water ingress...it would wash out all the gunk I suppose! Previously owned an '08 D3 HSE in Stornoway grey but jumped ship to see what the Swedes have to offer.

Not if it was designed that way in the first place.
