Thanks for all the replies. Will probably persevere over the next few months to see if we get the hang of them using the tips above.
If nothing else, I can delay removal following advice about the trim that may have been cut to fit. IIRC the mud flaps are shaped for the steps too.

had them on both D3's and now both D4's - they have saved me getting dents in the doors in carparks numerous times I have been walking back to my car and seen folks with their car door hard up against my steps, they just dont care. - worth it just for that Thumbs Up

Exactly this; step up with your "front" foot (closest to the front of the car) then sit "down" into it like you would climb into a car of lesser height. I know for a fact I wouldn't be enjoying my Disco commercial without them, and they make all the difference when reaching across the loadspace.
