Well, that put a dampener on it.....

Arrived back from a weeks holiday to find the car dead as a Dodo in the long stay car park at Newcastle Airport.
To be fair,I had concerns before we left it there, but ran out of time to put it on charge before leaving last week.
Managed to get it open using the emergency manual key blade in the remote, but it was completely dead.
Quick call to the AA who said they'd be out in half an hour, but as luck would have it they had another van arrive very shortly afterwards to deal with another flat battery 2 rows away from us.
Despite him attaching the Power Pack we had no joy,and even after also attaching jump leads to his van,it took almost 5 minutes before we had any signs of life...
Once started, the engine management light wouldn't extinguish, but he was happy there wasn't anything amiss and it drove the 70 mile journey home perfectly.
Also managed to break the internal handle mechanism trying to reattach the door handle in the dark Censored
If the engine management light doesn't disappear after a day on the CTEK tomorrow,I'll give them another ring.....Bit of a pain but we were probably only delayed about 30-40 minutes

Seems to be the MO for batteries these days. In olden times, you'd get a bit of a warning, the starter would turn over slower but the car would still start and you knew the battery needed looked at. Nowadays, they seem to go from hero to zero without much warning.

Euan, It shouldn't need a charge if you are doing a 70 mile journey, must be over an hour?

And if it was the alternator failed totally, then would five minutes on charge with a jump start be enough to get you home, I doubt it?

An hour driving would put very little extra charge in the battery. An 8 hour drive with no additional loads would probably do it.

I had a similar problem on my last Disco (MY12) and it was the battery. The LRA guy who came out said that he'd changed quite a few and thought that it was a bad batch. There was another thread on here about it ISTR.

Unfunnily enough, the dealer failed to diagnose it ( having been given the symptoms) and neither did a specialist battery company. LTA bloke stuck his machine on it, out came a scroll of print and in went a new battery.

Bill Thumbs Up

Having recently acquired a D4 (yet to fetch it), I requested the full service history of all the vehicles I was interested in - 5 in total.

What was very interesting to me is that almost all the FSH printouts looked exactly the same: flat battery after approx 18 months, wipers after 2 years, brake pads every year, key peeling after 2 years, etc.

The FSH for the vehicles all look very similar at the same intervals.

So it looks like the battery is probably due to the power-hungry D4.

Car held enough charge to open and start this morning....now hooked up to the CTEK....engine management light still on so will wait and see....
It did turn over more than usual before I set off,so I wasn't completely surprised to find it dead when I got back...I did consider disconnecting the Blackvue, but that defeats the purpose of having one.Even with the Power Magic it still drained a poorly charged battery...
Let's see what a full charge brings

Battery or car ?... Whistle
Quite simply,my car doesn't like sitting doing nothing for any length of time....the only 2 issues I have had have been after being unused for 10 days last Christmas, and yesterday after a week of inactivity...I'll just have to manage it better with Winter coming up and increased pressure on the battery
