Daytime Running Lights question

Evening!

Anyone here know if it's possible to activate the fog lights as DRL on D3?

Scandinavian models comes standard with the option "Scandinavian Daytime Running Lights". But if I disable this in the cars CCF, the "auto" position on the lights will then not activate any lights (front and back) as long as it's daytime. When dark (or tunnels etc), all lights come on.

If there would be possible to activate the fog-lights (which I have changed to LED) during daylight, that would definitely give the car a modern look. Meaning that when dark, the fog lights deactivates and driving lights (front and back) activates.

What's your thoughts on this? I mean that it should be possible since the D3 already have this auto feature.

There are options to enable the fogs with sidelights and to turn them off with the high beam but, for what you want, you'll have to do it the old fashioned way with relays etc.

If you disable the Scandinavian DRLs, you can just control the tail lights and fogs with an ignition feed. Add another NC relay to the fogs and they can go off with the sidelights/main beams. Thumbs Up

I wouldn't recommend it, as the above is a better option, but, alternatively, leave the lights enabled and use a changeover relay controlled by the sidelights to switch between the main beams and fogs.

Hi and thanks for the reply!

I just need to make a changeover from fog-lights (just want the fog-lights to activate, not park-lights or sidelights (wich I dont have)) to main beams when dark, dont need to have the taillight activated during daytime (no longer needed in Scandinavia).

Maybe that would simplify the task?

The same applies basically but just don't bother about the tail lights. Smile

I would still recommend the former option. Thumbs Up

If you don't have sidelights (interested to hear that you don't have them over there?) then just use the dipped beam to shut them off again. Wink

Im sorry, I misunderstood Rolling with laughter . I thought u ment the corner lamps for the side lights, but the side lights are the same as we say "park-lights". We all have them up here also Laughing !

If I let the fog light get a ignition feed, and then use a changeover relay to switch them off when main beam gets activated. But if I do it like this, then I wont be able to use the fog light combined with the main beam (not that I need that, just thinking about the other switch options inside the car).
Anyways this is not a problem for me, as I wouldnt really need this as long as I can sort out the main thing. Thumbs Up

Ah, I see. Laughing

If you put the normally closed relay only on the ignition feed (use a relay for that too) you can leave the current connection as it is so it is unaffected. Thumbs Up

Just realised, you'll need to isolate the fog feed to prevent the tell-tale lighting up on the instrument pack so you need something like this (simplified with only one light):

Any thoughts on the relays?

How many AMPs, what types etc? And how big fuse between the battery and relay? 30A?

Any old relays will do but higher quality ones will last longer. You'll either need to join the circuits together or use separate relays for each side (either 3 or 4 in total). Personally, I'd divide the current between sides to improve the life of the relays as they'll be switching wet.

LEDs won't draw much current so the fuse(s) won't need to be very high but the main thing is that they are fused in some way. I'd suggest you go for 15A (for the pair) which would be suitable should you ever want to revert to standard halogen 55W ones. Thumbs Up

Re UK DRL rules, I'm not sure exactly what they currently are for new cars but, when the D3 was produced, they were not required here (and so still aren't on a D3). Wink

Oh, and naturally, the relay's need to be suitable for at least the same 15A as the fuse. I'd go with standard 30A ones. Thumbs Up

Nice schematic ! Thumbs Up
Apart from the 'Ignition live' is there also an 'Engine live' or an 'In gear' signal like the Sandinavian DRL's behave.

I don't know, there may well be, somewhere, but, equally, such information is passed via the CANBUS so perhaps not.

As the DRLs don't use the sidelights, it would be possible to keep them enabled and create a circuit based on that if considered worthwhile. Thumbs Up
