Side steps - Remove or learn how to use them
I know this may seem really stupid, but after almost 8 years of having our D3 without side steps, we now find the steps on our D4 a real pest and can't get on with them. They seem to be awkward to use, get in the way when in narrow parking bays where you can't open the door fully and neither of us find them easy to use. If I step up onto them in the way in, I then have to duck under the top of the door opening. If I don't use them, I inevitably brush my trouser leg on them and get mucky. SWMBO, despite her dodgy knee also hasn't worked out how to use them and is muttering about (me) removing them.
So, how do others use them? Or, do I just remove them and sell them?Renny Thomson

IIRC parts of the trim have been cut away to fit them so if you remove you will have some unsightly gaps.
Personally I find them really useful and the kids like them because they can actually get in safely.

When I am in a carpark I set the car to full height so other users throw their doors open and they hit the steps and not my precious car. D3 HSE ........................Gone!!!

When in a Discovery without steps I find I have to clamber in, crushing down the seat edges - and similarly when getting out..... after a while these will have permanent creases and be flattened one side (at least thats what happened on my previous second hand card where the owner never bothered to use them).
Getting in - Right foot onto the side step, lightly grab starring wheel or upper 'roof' handle for support (miss my LandCruisers door pillar grab handle) - swing left leg underneath and across, duck and your in! Getting out - swing right foot out onto step - ease out onto left foot ease yourself out and up still standing with both feet this time on the step step down without crushing seat with !
Thats how I do it anyway .... would really miss them!! - and has been said good as door protectors! 2016MY Discovery HSE - Black

I find having the steps helps in tight parking spaces. If I can't open the door very wide I find I can stand on the step and move backwards along the step before closing the door, then just step down.

I binned mine they drove me mad.
I just set suspension to access mode (D3) before stopping no problems getting in or out.

Get them off, they ruin the lines of the vehicle.
Seat covers do just as good a job of protecting the seat sides. D2 are notorious for worn seat edges, ours has done 175K and the seat is absolutely fine as it's always had cover on it.
If I had to be paranoid about parking a vehicle I would park somewhere else or get a another car.IID PRO

I like the steps on mine and as has been said I have walked along mine in tight parking spaces. I also feel they protect the seat base, as I've had the foam base replaced in mine.Andy

How will seat covers stop a seat getting squashed down and creased? All they will stop is the dirty and stains? You will still be sliding down the side of the seat or squashing one side down to get in or out 2009 Discovery 3 HSE - Gone

Considered them on my D3 as they look B awfull like a cheap nasty after market accessory

On fabric seats the covers help you slide on an off the seat and they keep the seat in place so it stops the foam inside getting pulled all over the place and getting damaged.
Our D3 has always had covers and the side of the seat is absolutely fine at 140K, D2 is on 175K and the seat is also fine.
The same may not be true of leather which most likely has vinyl side panelIID PRO
