Received car back today with gearbox re-conned. It has cost £1700 +vat (£2040) They have said they do not have time to do front diff and I should bring it back in a fortnight and he will look at it (Not do it) They have also said it will probably need a new one at a cost of £1200 fitted I am not happy about this is there any thing else I can do bearing in mind the bearings and oil seals have already been done. I got the feeling that gearboxes are their main thing and they don,t want to mess with second hand diffs.
Can you buy a crown wheel and pinion separate or would I have to buy the whole thing ? I don't really want to buy a new diff but recon one would be ok if this one cannot be repaired. Can anybody recommend where to get one from ? Thanks

City gearboxes in Coventry, that's where I got my exchange recon front diff from and it's been fine price was around £500 all in iirc, fitted myself so no idea of labour cost but it's not the hugest job to do.

Aerial mark.
If the have changed pinion bearings have they set it up correctly. Ideally they need to replace the crush sleeve, and set the pre load correctly.
I have my diff in pieces as I type about to put it back together.
I could pop in to Coventry gearboxes and see what they replace.

Thankyou for that Mr Nc1989
That is something Adam because before it had the bearing's done on the diff it only vibrated when you backed off the gas at 60 and upwards now it does it when you put your foot on the gas at 60 upwards. I will need to ask him on Monday. Trouble is I don't really want to take it back to him I would rather get it done elsewhere. Its just knowing where to take it in the North West. Thanks Adam

[img]My job for this afternoon.
Inside of the front differential. All clean ready for rebuild.
On the diff front I spoke to Tom at Barley garage and told him my problems with the diff he put the new bearings in and we have decided to go for a fully reconned diff which he will fit for free. So I am happy with that (Well reasonably). He also told me he had received his letter for speeding in my car and opted for the speed awareness course.
