I have just found out that my D3 needs a new front diff AND a gearbox. I have been quoted by a Land Rover Indy 600 plus vat for a new diff, £1500 for reconditioning the gearbox at Tameside transmittions and about £550 labour to take out and refit both diff and gearbox. So a total of about £2800 Do you think this is a fair price ? I am abosolutly gutted and wish I had never set eyes on the bloody thing. I am now stuck with it and will have spent at least £4000 on it. Wbac have offered £6100 for something I paid £8000 for 2 months ago. Would you sell or get it repaired and have a decent car ? I really am at the end of my tether now. Where's that canal ?

or auto ?BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
Founder: Dipsticks-R-Us Inc
D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.
Do you not think that could be false economy ? I have but a secondhand diff would be about £400 and may only last a short time with no g/tee. As for the gearbox the cheapest I have seen is about £850 and it's done 90 odd thousand miles. Also if he fits my parts there will be no G/tee at all.
Those prices sound about right. Having been in a fairly similar position recently, I'd say get it done. You'll be a lot happier afterwards than you might think. Thanks for that fella, it's what I needed to hear. £2800 is a lot of money and takes me a long time to earn but I think you are right after tinting the Windows, new rear lights ,new torque converter and rear prop it should be good for a few trouble free miles when done. O and not forgetting a Bodsy remap ! The bodywork is immaculate so I think I will go for it. Thanks.

I wouldn't be fitting a 2nd hand diff or Autobox to my car, especially as these are both very common for giving issues...
At least you know you will have a good car at the end of it.
That's what I keep telling myself My D3 Build Thread
Never expect trouble free miles with a D3, but yes, it does give a lot more piece of mind. Current: Discovery 3 06MY (55 reg) HSE Auto Zambezi Silver Allisport Fast Road Intercooler, V8 Brakes, Silicone IC Hoses, EGRs Blanked, Remapped, De-Cat pipe, FBHIC

I know you are right so new and recon parts are the way to go. Just a thing Mike if you were doing it what would you charge ? PM me if you like. By the way no rush with the gap tool as I have nothing to use it on for a while I am not sure I will be able to use it when I get car back ! I will have a go though.

£500 isn't far off the mark for a diff and G/box swap
Thanks very much Mike I will check when I get home. I will then hide it from my wife as "that will be more money spent on that pile of outside". "Do you know for all that money you have spent on that Landrover thing out side we could have had one of those BMW cars like Mick and Alison accross the road"
