District change of engine note at idle.

Just collected a new wagon. At idle it's as expected. At least for a few minutes.

Once the vehicle has run for a few minutes the engine note deepens - as if a valve in the exhaust has opened.

Anyone else experienced this?

Thanks.

Hi BenB and welcome. I hadn't noticed that, but probably drowned out by my dashboard rattles Wink

Could be the DPF doing a regenerate sequence. It does sound a bit gruff when it does it. How many miles on it?

Yes. Most of the time I can hear it start whilst I am driving, the engine note changes distinctly at low revs. If I stop, the idle is rough. If you are at motorway speeds, I don't notice any difference, but I suspect it regenerates a lot quicker at speed.

You guys need to read up on DPF regeneration..... Whistle

It doesn't happen at idle, needs to see steady speed for x minutes etc., etc.
 Stew,

Yep in no way will the DPF be regenerating at idle.

My initial presumption was that the OPs D4 changed exhaust note as he drove into a different area Whistle

There is loads going when the vehicle is warming up. The fuelling strategy is different, the injectors are over-providing, the glow plugs are in their continuous afterglow mode, the DPF is warming up, as is the cat and the EGRs will get in on the act too.
