Pressure washer = damage to paintwork ??
Surely only if you are a complete numpty and try and remove everything up close at full pressure. A jumbo car sponge can be more damaging to paintwork than a pressure washer.
If used correctly then it is not an issue. Stay away from chipped areas and by that I mean stand back and not spray the water at close quarters (closer than two feet)
Most of the damage at dealer come from incorrectly removed 'large' deposits that as scraped off during the bucket and sponge follow up, where the surface cr@p is dragged along the surface of the paint and not cleaned properly.
As i mentioned, you will do more damage with a halfrauds jumbo fathers day special sponge, than a correctly operated pressure washer.
Have to agree with you there John, sponges are definitely more evil than pressure washers! The End

On your buggy DG? I'm not so good at giving advice...may I offer you a sarcastic comment instead?
Following on from JKP's reply about how to use a pressure washer - OK if you keep them 2 feet away maybe no paint damage - but at two feet the effect of a pressure washer is debateable.
I certainly know how to use one - the point I made is entrusting your dearly belloved Disco to a garage & they think they are doing you a service by cleaning it. On the contrary - its not thier car they dont have the lasting involvement or pay the bills after warranty ends..
When you consider who garages employ to car wash aint exactly the "Brain of Britian" contestants they see a bit of muck or oil & blast it - if it doesnt move they just put the lance closer. Thats being a numpty.
Where I came unstuck was on my last Disco 2 had a steering box leak that put all the fluid under the car along the chassis etc the garage who replaced the box (Newcastle) pressure washed the underside at "close quarters". On reciept of the car no immediate problems then a variety of warning lights transmission overheat (in winter going slow & fast) transmission faults, various ABS warnings & a fault on the Active Ride system.
These warnings came & went then came back at the most odd times, also if Itook the car into water all sorts of alarms fired up. On investigation (by another competant garage the faults were attributed to water ingress into the various wiring harnesses at connector points. Cured by changing out same.
The service manager of the LR garage re inforced the message about pressure washing & told me the cost of what I would have had to pay if warranty wasnt supporting the vehicle - a lot of £'s.
I get your point about sponges - I use a micro fibre wash mitt (a Meguiairs one - Halfrauds) & keep this well rinsed & machine wash it after each use - first I hose the car off with a normal hose.
The whole point of this website is sharing facts & opinions that may benefit others in the upkeep of something we have common in - I access to learn what I can - if someone benefits from my disasters its served its purpose. I always err on the side of safety especially when the wrong thing being done costs me dosh that I needn't pay out. Thats why I dont pressure wash or let anyone else do it to my kit

I don't know why yo are apologising John ....BL has his opinion and is entitled to it ...but if he doesn't have enough confidence to use a washer properly then I don't really know what to say ...but that doesn't mean that the pressure washer can't have its place in doing a job.
The manual states:
Quote:
Caution: Some high pressure cleaning
systems are sufficiently powerful to
penetrate door and window seals and
damage rubbing strips and locking
mechanisms. Never aim the water jet directly
at the engine air intake, heater air intakes,
body and sunroof seals, or at any
components that might easily be damaged.
Do not use a power wash system in the
engine bay area.
Read individual product warnings before
using any car cleaning or washing products.
I think we can all understand that can't we 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

I have a pressure washer but I have to say I rarely use it, to my mind they don't use enough water to rinse dirt off, they blow debris along the car's surface, but then I don't use a sponge either and I polish all scratches out when they happen. Doing the job I do I don't think a scratched dirty car on a client's drive creates the right impression; but there again I always have clean shoes DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone
