Gearbox being replaced - worth changing clutch?

As per the title, the manual gearbox in my 2009 D3 is being replaced under warranty.

The car has done 68,000 miles, presumably on the original clutch, so is it worth replacing the clutch as a preventative measure while the box is out? Surely it should save costs further down the line? It's not slipping oe showing any problems.

If so, am I ok just replacing the clutch plate or do other bits like the slave cylinder need doing at the same time? How much should an original Land Rover clutch cost?

Cheers.

Yes from me, silly not to. I would replace the friction plate, pressure plate (part with the radial spring) and release bearing. Don't know the OEM part numbers or aftermarket but sure someone will be along shortly to help. Re slave cylinder, provided its not leaking, I wouldn't replace at the same time.

Cheers

Yes, definitely change the whole clutch kit, 3parts. Not expensive in the scheme of things and a lot cheaper than labour to take the gearbox out again. Slave cylinder??? depends on your pocket but for me I would also change that as it means taking the gearbox out and the disruption that causes. Thumbs Up

Yes to clutch and dual mass wheel as well - only parts to pay for.

A resounding 'yes' vote then! I've had a look for the clutch parts and it's not looking cheap, especially as the gearbox is being done by Land Rover and the clutch will need to be supplied by them as well.

I suppose I need to weigh up the options of either leaving the clutch and selling the car in the Summer when the warranty runs out, or replacing it and keeping it long term - another two years at least.

Two more years of warranty is £2400, the clutch could be £600 or so and it needs the belts doing next April. So probably the best part of £3500 to be spent over and above depreciation to keep for another two years. (There's no way I'd run one of these without a warranty!)

There's a '12 plate D4 down the road for me that's up for £26k with two years warranty. I'm wondering if that could work out cheaper!? Or a 2010 Supercharged RR Sport for the same money. Decisions decisions!

I agree, £1200 a year buys a lot of repairs on a normal car but doesn't go very far on these, even with a specialist rather than main dealer.

For me it's about knowing roughly what my costs will be for the year so it buys peace of mind, to an extent.

On the other hand it's had all sorts replaced under warranty over the last 10 months - wishbones and bushes, rear differential, EGR valves and gearbox. I've also had the four wheel alignment done under warranty. Perhaps it should be good for a few years?

It's a lot of money for what you may get out of it now, seeing as you have had a lot of main components replaced alreAdy.

How will you feel in two short years time, that you didn't manage to get £2400 worth of claims?

I'm with Mick - put the money aside instead. You've certainly removed some potentially expensive issues for the time being. Thumbs Up

£1200 can go a long way if you can do stuff yourself. Wink Smile

I'm surprised you had wishbones replaced under warranty; they'd normally be considered wear and tear - Were they faulty? Question

I presume at £600 odd pounds for a clutch parts it includes the DMF, if not seems very expensive to me. Not much labour charge involved as gearbox is already out to be changed.Ask stealer for a breakdown of costs on clutch replacement.

The wishbones were done in the prep before I bought it from the main dealer, so not a warranty claim as such. The cost of £600 is something I sort of guessed at; Rimmerbros have an original LR clutch for £400 but it excludes the flywheel.

I can wield a spanner and do jobs myself, it's just that I also have a TVR that takes up most of my spannering time! Very Happy

The Disco is something I just want to get into and drive, especially as I'm away six months of the year leaving it for my wife to drive. If it has a problem I just want her to call Land Rover and get them to fix it rather than her wait a month for me to get home to do it myself.

The thing is, once you start factoring in £1200 for a warranty, £400 for a main dealer service to avoid any warranty issues, a couple of grand of depreciation and probably a few wear and tear items not included in the warranty, you start getting towards the cost of buying a brand new one with three years warranty and a service plan!

Crazy price!!!

I renewed my Warranty Direct LuxuryCare warranty for 2 years + 1 month in April this year for £1,314, payable by quarterly installments with 0% interest added.

MY D3 is Manual 2009 like yours, mileage at start 69k.

The WD warranty has no excess, no betterment, includes ICE & Sat. Nav etc... and allows me to use any garage with a labour rate of up to £200 per hour. It also provides Hotel, recovery & emergency travel expenses of £250 (each category) per claim, and 7 days car hire at £50 per day.

yogi972 is dead right stop using LR Main Dealer & use a decent Indy.

Please keep us advised of what you ultimately do - good luck.
