Yeah, I'm well aware that main dealer prices are much higher and that the warranty is significantly more expensive than someone like warranty direct.
BUT, and it's a big 'but', I know that the Land Rover warranty is good and that it will pay out on things that go wrong. The service department at my local Land Rover dealers are excellent (pity about the sales!). You hear too many horror stories about Warranty Direct (and others) wriggling out of claims and the warranty being absolutely worthless.
I suppose the convenience of having my maintenance done by the main dealer and also having them being the point of contact for the warranty just makes the whole thing a little less stressful and that having a decent relationship with them makes things easier. I don't have to pay for the repair and then spend ages hoping the warranty company stumps up. I've had it with other forms of insurance where I've had to pay thousands of pounds out initially and then face an agonising wait for the money to be reimbursed - not something I fancy repeating.
I suppose I should buy something Japanese and then not have to worry about making these decisions!
I know we've sort of strayed from my original topic here, but has anyone had positive or negative experience with the aftermarket warranty companies? You tend to hear more negatives as that's what makes people head to the Internet to moan and compain.....

Ok, I've spoken with the Land Rover garage and been given a price of £40 labour but £940 of parts! Plus VAT.
The £940 included absolutely everything though - clutch kit, flywheel, cylinder, a valve of some kind, bolts etc...
The clutch kit itself is £280, is it worth just replacing that and keeping all the other components? Or am I wasting my time with that option? The flywheel was £330.

Difficult decision.
If I were in your shoes I would, at the very least, ask the LR Dealer to rework the price - downwards.
In my own shoes I would walk away from the dealer & the LR warranty as I suggested above, and find a highly recommended to do the entire job.
I'm not from your area, so can't recommend anyone - but no doubt someone will be along soon with a recommendation.

had my gear box replaced under warranty and I asked if they would replace the clutch and DMF at the same time, they only charged for the parts I paid all in about £ 400.00 but that was 4 years ago Transit Custom LWB

It's really not an easy decision to make!
I'd like to move away from the main dealers but the nearest decent specialist is 20 miles away, versus 3 miles for the main dealer. On the plus side they're giving me a Discovery Sport for a couple of days next week (not that I'm particularly keen on them).
At the moment I'm inclined to try to get them to reduce the price of the clutch kit and flywheel to something like £500, unless anyone thinks this is a waste of time? I don't know if the slave cylinder is a particular weak point on these?

Just to update the thread; I couldn't get the price any lower for the clutch parts and the price they quoted was very close to the parts and labour an independent garage would charge to do the whole job.
So, my car went in today with the instruction for them to inspect the state of the clutch and let me know if it was worn and needed changing. Turns out it's in great condition and so was the flywheel. No need to replace them at all.
However, even though the new gearbox is much tighter than the old one, it's still making a whining noise. I'm beginning to think it's just part of the character of the car with the plus side being that it's now had the rear diff, front diff and gearbox all replaced under warranty. Think I'll push for the transfer box before the warranty runs out and then take my chances!

Is the wining present in all gears?, does it get worse in low range ?
Andi.
Ps if I was away as much as you, I would be very tempted by the one phone call sorts everything approach, you do pay for it though.

The whining noise is present when you accelerate hard under load. e.g. When accelerating up a hill. On the flat it's occasionally present but downhill it doesn't do it at all.
It occurs between about 2000-2500 rpm and the noise is best described as sounding like the straight cut gears in racing cars. I can't get it to do it in low range.
The garage initially said they all made that noise. Then they diagnosed the diffs and then at the last service they dropped the oil from the gearbox and found metal in it.
On the plus side I've ended up with an almost entirely new driveline! The other thing is that I've had extended test drives in Freelanders, Evokes and now the Disco Sport. None of them would ever get me spending my own money on them!

Ok. In my experience, a worn transfer box whines at all speeds regardless of load, and mine was considerably louder in low range. I guess bits in the gearbox oil is a bit of a giveaway.
Andi.
