D4 Heated Steering Wheel - enabled or not?

After retrofitting a wheel to MY10 D4 the heating element and night illumination don't work.
Does it need enabling or not as I've read conflicting reports.
If it does then how, what with?
I've contacted Gap who suggest it is hard wired and there is no CCF edit
I'm starting to think I may have bought a pup Big Cry

I've just had a quick look on Genesis for the Nanocom and in the CCF editing part there is a setting to enable Heated Steering wheel. Whether or not that means it needs enabling or not is another question which I'm sure somebody with more experience will be along shortly Thumbs Up

Thanks HD
Perhaps this is something GAP have not come across yet.
Can I ask what module the setting is in as I can't see reference to it when I look on genesis but then again I'm looking at as built and my car didn't have it originally but would have thought it would just say not enabled Question

It's under Heating and Ventilation but you will have to click on Switch editor mode to get it to appear. Thumbs Up

the illumination should work as long as the switch pack is connected properly. Regardless of the enabling of the heated wheel (which does need enabling).

Thanks both.
Switch packs light ok on old wheel but not new.
I've noticed the looms are quite different on the 2 wheels - I was expecting just the additional 2 wires going to the heater ecu but there's more than that?
Might have a wiring problem as I wouldn't expect both switch packs to be faulty?

What wheel have you fitted?

The clock spring is common across the range, so wiring loom plugs would be to?

I had a problem with mine at one stage, the loom was the wrong way round and not even plugged into the add on PCB.
Have you got power going into to the clock spring?
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

mse - yep got the extra 2 pin clock spring

m3dpo - checked all connections ok. Checked 12v coming through clock spring ok
With wheel on bench put 12v onto the 2 pin connector with an additional -ve onto the main wheel/airbag connection to give the Ecu power - still don't work.

Beanie - not sure exact origin of wheel - ebay
Reading the D4 wheel onto D3 thread it seams the illumination is controlled by the switchback controls?
I've traced the cables from the ecu and there are extra cables that I'm assuming are the comms - 2 whites, 1 to the ecu and 1 to the switchpack. There's an orange and black.
These 4 wires are connected to the main loom with a 3 pin connector (both whites together) and change colour - White, orange, black becomes red, brown, black.
I assume this is the comms and -ve? which may could confirm why it has to be enabled?
HD - I found the setting you mentioned in genesis
I was thinking next move to try and enable it and see what happens.

Everything else works ok so hope the switchpack controller is ok

Scotland

I have put a heated wheel on a 2010 GS and 2012 XS D4 and only changed the clock spring.

They don't need enabling despite there being an option in the CCF.

I had GAP check this out (see below) and although they did send me the beta with it in it made no difference as they looked at the wiring and its a straight feed.

When I sold my D4 I sold the clock spring and wheel to another forum user who installed it without needing enabling in his 2012 XS.

Just checked the wiring diagram for the heated steering wheel and I don't see how CCF can change anything.
It seem all hardwired.

Check fuse 20P (10A) in passenger fuse box, maybe the fuse is not there.

Good Day!

Perhaps there is some difference in the types of wheel ecu?
It would help if I knew what the white and orange wires were that are connected to the ecu.

All the d4 ones I've fitted have always needed enabling to get them to work.
They should illuminate without being enabled regardless when you have the sidelights on, but it won't work or illuminate brighter (showing its working) without being enabled.

Could be specific firmware or something that has allowed other variants to work?

D4 wheel on a d3 should be fine though istr.

Ian, that is odd. The wiring does show a straight feed to the heating module. Unless in newer steering wheels the module needs 'activated' prior to them working. But as they are sold as heated wheels that's a bit strange as well.
