Well, that's odd - my central screen told me that the battery was low in my key, so being the good owner I am, I bought a new CR2032 and replaced it.
All working fine, except... The message is still there.
I've tested the battery and it shows 3.25v, the old battery was showing 3.01. I've tried the spare key and that is fine, so I popped the battery from that into my main key and the message is still there, but the spare key (with the new battery) still shows no message.
Is there some sort of reset routine I need to follow after changing the battery?

Don't know, but try the Keyless Start Backup procedure to get the smart key recognised?
Position the Smart Key against the underside of the steering column cover with the buttons facing downwards.
Note: There are markings on the cover to help locate the correct position.
When the Smart Key is positioned in this area, it will be recognised by the vehicle and the message Smart Key Recognised will be displayed in the message centre.
Holding the Smart Key in position and the brake or clutch pedal depressed, press and release the START/STOP button to start the engine.
Once the engine has been started, you no longer need to hold the Smart Key against the steering column cover.

Tried that, but still no joy
I'm wondering if it's a duff key, but surely that wouldn't do anything at all? My key functions exactly as it should, but just gives this error message all the time (and keeps the yellow warning triangle illuminated)

Absolutely spot-on response. It was the battery, despite it being a good make, and new in the packaging, it was not good enough.
I toddled along to Timpson today and bought a new Renata cell from them, popped it in and the warning disappeared immediately.
Many thanks for the replies and the help

A certain dealer in Central Leeds replaced my battery with one that I assume came from the nearest market stall for £6. It worked for a whole 3 weeks before needing another replacement ! 2010 MX-5 2.0 Sport Tech PRHT
