Need to no, included, not normally, flushing pumps the oil out, normally it's double flushed and removes crap from the box, you could drop the sump and oil, replace with a metal one with seperate filter and replace the oil, but given the cleanliness required, not something to do without due care Altox GSM FBH controller thread

Got to be worth changing the filter at least once?

Not at 70k miles
Did wifes quattro the other night almost the same box as disco, Audi on 67k, Ive always said oil/filters cheap engines and gearboxes not.
Audi has tin sump as standard so much easier and cheaper job.
Lots of fine debris on both her Audi gearbox magnets and my D3 magnets.
Audi is way smoother with the new oil and filter, not sure on the D3 yet but on a long run yesterday did get 2mpg more than last time, but we all know that could just be the weather.

There was very, very little debris on my sump magnets at 115k, and look how that's turned out.
The issue is not the filter (I use filter in the loosest term, it is a strainer, not a filter) The issue is not changing the oil early enough. My D3 Build Thread

totally agree with mikey ,its not the strainer its lack of a transmission fluid service thats causing the problems on D3,s and will start to cause problems on D4,s soon if the fluid is not changed

we've had many autos (approx 10 ish) over the years and treated them all the same, i.e. new filter and oil when I first got them then a year or two later changed the oil again but not the filter and apart from one stroppy box never had any issues at all.
So Im not saying who's right and wrong but in my simple mechs mind a new filter can't do any wrong, its not like its difficult/expensive or anything, imagine doing an engine oil change and not changing the filter ! it just seems wrong.
Good one here also from ZF themselves again, yank speaker so its a zee eff transmission!

thanks guys. I am of the thinking that in my mind if you were doing the oil you should change the filter
but as described above it probably isn't necessary. and given that its a pain to get into /convert to the serviceable design and added expense .
Maybe common sense says not to, especially if backed up by two off our finest gurus
now I appreciate that a mega flush is the best option but can you not just try to drain as much oil as possible and refill possibly a few times to mostly renew the oil, without changing filter or major hassle ,or is this not possible ?
And how about gear box resets?
I ask as my box seems ok no noticeable judder(just probably jinxed it now) occasionally searches for gears but not very offer and mostly seems ok but I feel like sometimes when going around corners that it seems to drop a bit and when pulling away its cert unresponsive and sort of seems to do nothing then it kicks in to action all of a sudden, now I'm not sure if this is gearbox related or turbo or something else?
My mileage is actually early 80s and I'm very keen to change oil as it seems more important the more I think about fit and research it .blessed are the losers ,for they determine the winners

Have you checked and lubed your auto box selector linkage pivot widget?
Ref drain and refill to clean oil yes it will work, poss not as well as the flush, again if you think about it thats exactly what happens when you service the engine as you simply cannot get all the old oil out.
Changing sump to steel type design is not hard just a tag fiddly on the front and rear row of bolts, basically you can't get a ratchet onto them so have to use a cranked torx key, then snap of the filter spout with a bar, sounds bad but is easy and this was my first time with the plastic sump.

The problem with doing a double flush, as opposed to a power flush, is the new oil mixes with the old, and dilutes it.
With a normal drain/refill, you replace 4 litres, about 1/3 of the oil capacity.
You then have to run the engine, to circulate the oil, and drain again. As the oil has mixed, when you drain again, you will probably get out about the equivalent of 2 litres old, and 2 litres new oil.
Still less than half of the oil capacity.
To get anywhere near 80-90% oil change, you would have to flush the box 5 or 6 times...
It's cheaper, easier and nuch, much quicker having a flush done My D3 Build Thread
