Fault with our 14MY D4 - LR don't think its a problem |
|
So we've had 8000miles in 6 months of great driving but it's gone weird!
Started on boxing day, set off the M1 and within about 5mins I knew the car felt odd, felt lethargic and draggy. Holding gears too long, lumpy changes.
Also noticed a faint whistle sound when it's cold, sounds like distant sirens (Police, Ambulance sirens)
Carried on and noticed Fuel Consumption was rubbish for a Motorway running at 19MPG vs the 29-30MPG we've been getting
Felt like brakes were on but checked the wheels.
It's been into the dealer who can find no fault, no scoring, no evidence of a fault however our average MPG is now 18MPG and it just feels wrong to drive (even my wife has noticed it, and she could drive with 4 flat tyres and not notice!)
Dealer says ring LRA next time I feel it, as they can't fix what they can't find.
Not sure what to do. It ain't right.

If you put it in neutral when it happens, does it feel like the brakes are binding.
If not I would check the intercooler hose, quite often you can't see a split, but it is there. I guess if you have a DPF you won't see the clouds of smoke either. The symptoms sound similar to a intercooler hose issue.

Definitely sounds like an air leak (hence the whistle), and intercooler hose would be my bet too.

Well it's been back to the dealer, (not supplying dealer) and they haven't been able to replicate / find the problem. They have driven it for 150 miles.
They couldn't / didn't improve the fuel economy. They averaged 20 mpg while they had it.
Basically saying they can't fix what they can't see / find.
Land Rover customer services seem to have just said " if it continues go back to dealer"
So I have a car with an intermitent problem that LR can't find and fuel consumption is up by a 1/3 even if I drive as careful as can be. (20MPG for a 14MY)
Bit of a loss, not sure what to do.
Would been much happier if they had said, here's the problem and we need to replace this, having a car with a "mystery problem" means we have lost faith in the car.

Push Landrover customer services, keep at them saying the dealer can not find the fault / problem. there is clearly something not right, another option would be to get it on a rolling road and try from there.

As far as I know they have checked for fault codes & visually checked the brakes and driven it.

Pete's looking at it but essentially saying if dealers can't identify it there's not a lot they can do.
Not sure where that leaves me

Get someone (LR dealer preferably but maybe worth 1/2 hour labour at an indy/trusted garage?) to check the hoses suggested in earlier threads - sounds like a good place to start for me. Not sure of access but if you can get hold of them and try twisting then any splits may start to 'open up' on the hose as difficult to see usually. Coat with soapy washing-up liquid and water and rev car to see if any bubbles showing, etc.
All very basic but often these things catch people out but at a loss as to why a dealer can't find anything, especially after 150 mile test run

I suspect if they cannot find anything the actual length of the test run is irrelevant. 2014MY Discovery

Did they take off the heat shields behind the NSF wheel and check the smallest of the three inter cooler hoses? Not easy to get at but that's the one that split on my car.

Well after being pretty much told that unless LR can find the problem there isn't a problem. (and they tried loads of times)
It happened again today and was able to video it.
Note the fact it's a level road and it's not creeping forward.
Note the MPG!!
Not the fact it just stops without me touching the brake
Note the engine holding the gears despite very gentle use of throttle.
You'll need to view @ 720HD to see the dark bit that my foot is nowhere near the brake.
