I've had a very intermittent brakes related issue that seems similar.
I started a thread on here about it some months back here:

and someone suggested a possible cause that seems valid. anyway, since then I've lifted the brake pedal with my foot each time it happens - that'll do for me till the next time it's in for service.

Get them to check the cat is not blocked, the cat is only on the left hand bank, (sat in the car) they should be able to do this using their diag tool, I've seen this several times, it won't flag a fault until it's very blocked

Think Brian's might be the one, the engine doesn't feel wrong just like its struggling against the car.
