I had to return a Jack (3t QL) type to Machine Mart, that twisted its frame under the D3 ( I think there are some photos on here somewhere

Like you it had to be returned for Inspection.

They concluded (unsurprisingly) that there was no fault and it must have been what i did with it, so no refund/credit

The Manager at the branch did give me some discount off a bigger & better jack.

I would be surprised if they treat you much differently

Hmmm - got me worried about mine now, I got the exact same ones from eBay last year for about half what MM are charging, I must admit on first sight I thought they looked a bit flimsy, they could certainly do with a bit more support at the sides and some cross bracing at the back too.

In fairness, I've used them a couple of times and they've not buckled so far, I will be very wary the next time though Rolling Eyes

Some better quality images. Looks like they are made by these folks http://www.cougardevelopments.co.uk/ramps.html and sold through a number of retailers, many selling them for a lot less than I paid at Machine Mart.

I presume from a legal perspective I don't have a leg to stand on. They are at liberty to replace if they find fault rather than refund. Will just have to write it off to experience, buy a decent set and avoid Machine Mart in future...

Actually, under the sale of goods act 1994, if good are found to be faulty or are unfit for purpose then you are entitled to a full refund. If the seller offers anything less you do not have to accept it, indeed they may be in breach of the act by not offering the refund. (of course the age of the item is important and would have a bearing on any caim) You could also go Trading Standards to report them or indeed unsafe goods).

I must say, the quality of those ramps looks cr^p they're really rough, poor welding and the finish....... I could have made better ones myself. Also looking at the link for the makers, appart from an extra cross bar on the face of the ramp there doesn't appear to be any structural difference between the 2000kg and 2500kg ones. At the very least the bar the gave on yours should have been nothing less than angle iron.

They do indeed look very poor quality strength wise even the paint finish is shocking! Insist on a refund and buy some that are up to the job! Thumbs Up

I think legally, given they are now about 6 months old albeit with little use, the retailer is entitled to offer repair, replacement or refund but it's their choice. I would laugh in their faces if they offered a repair but refund timelines seem to more along the lines of days than weeks or months.

I'll wait and see if they accept liability first. If they do, I'll argue for a refund but that'll be on the premise of them retaining their good reputation. If they don't, I'll have that small claims court website open again...

i know they are only a functional item but one look at the general finish inc paint would have made my mind up that they are a poor quality product.

my dad was an HVG mechanic and i used to help out on saturdays sevicing Scania and Volvo trucks
he always was recounting stories of poorly supported vehicles and the consequences of a collapse

a safety tip he told me and i do to this day ,if your changing a wheel as soon as you get the old one off lay it down and slide it under the vehicle till the new replacement is on and secure . if it comes off the jack /block
then you have a chance of surviving and getting out of the collapse.

I agree - I think I was a bit hasty in my purchase. I was keen to (re)acquire the necessary workshop items when I got my D3. But it doesn't get away from the fact they're not just ugly, they're weak too Smile.

Yes, if I have a car on jacks / stands and remove a wheel I always push it underneath. Why wouldn't you? It keeps it out of the way and might just save your life.

They look similar in construction to the Halfords ramps, that are only rated to 1000kg, which is too low for a D3/4. Halfords also state a maximum tyre size. Were your tyres over the edges of the ramp?

Actually I was in Halfords the same day and was mightily impressed by the construction of their ramps in comparison Smile. The CRW25s are a "wide" ramp as well as being rated at 2.5t so they're probably a bit wider than these Halfords ones.

I'd say the tyres were a snug fit - the full tread would be on the ramp but the deformation of the sidewall meant the tyre might overhang slightly if you see what I mean.

still think you could have a case for not fit for purpose. Ramps are sold as a piece of garage equipment that is expected to last for a number of years and still carry the stated loads. The fact that they only lasted a few (6-7) months should not deter you from demanding a full refund, especially as this is also a Health & Safety issue and the consequences could so easily have been worse (think manslaughter at worst). I would speak with your local Citizen Advice or Trading standards and get advice from the experts, nothing to lose by trying.

I cant believe anyone would buy ramps with paint that looks as though it was applied by a cows backside!

Did these actually come with the paint like that, or have you added hamerite or something to cover up the rust?

The paint on mine looks just the same, I think they're dipped in some kind of slimy Censored rather than sprayed.
