Engine Oil
Just discovered that my engine is very low on oil - now warning light, just a bit noise on start up and then a check on the dipstick told the truth.
Haven't got the hand book to hand. Can someone tell me if it is a special type of oil - synthetic or something?

Engine oil - Diesel vehicles
Use 5W/30 oil meeting ACEA: B1 or B3.

It happened with me too, no ligth, no noise, but when I checked the dipstick, the oil was just touching the end of it. That was couple thousands miles ago, now I started to check it regularly and discovered that the engine consumes around 0.3 litre oil per one thousand miles (after around 13K miles in the engine).

There is a sticker on top of the engine telling you which oil to use.
Mine used oil at first, and if I had not checked it weekly, it would also have run out before 1st service.
Now 23000 miles, and not used a drop since first service at 15k.
I still check the oil & water every week, just for peace of mind.

I went and bought the right oil and stuck 4.5 litres in and I'm really not convinced it is even showing on the dip stick at the right level.
There are several orange 'blobs' at the end of the stick, is the level just supposed to be between the top and the bottom one when the vehicle is stood on a level surface?

The oil is full synthetic.

Thats about right, be careful you don't over fill it.
Once the oil is on the 'balls' it does not take much to get it to the top. It also takes a while for it to find its way down to the sump, so fill it slowly and carefully, a little bit at a time.

My D3 does not use any oil at all, but then I did run it in properly by limiting speed, revs and no stop start driving for at least 1000 miles, so obviously it pays and I got the dealer to change the oil at 4000 miles. There was no loss according to them either at that mileage.
Constant cold stop start and no distance driving will kill an engine quicker than you can imagine together with revs over 2000 for the first 1500 miles.

What ever you do, do not over fill an engine ever.

BN, mine already had 4,000 miles on it before I got it (ex demo) and I have no idea how it was driven - though obviously I will convince myself that the dealer ran it in properly and none of the folk who test drove it ever over reved it.

Point taken regarding over-filling. I was careful not to go mad topping it up this afternoon. I just need to check how far up the orange dots it is at the moment when stood for a while. It was just over the bottom one after I had added the oil (and cleaned up the over spill on the rocker cover - due to the wind rather than hand shaking). I find the balls a little difficult to read, so I get a kitchen towel and drop the stick into it. The oil mark shows exactly where the level is. Alsl only check the oil when the car has been standing on level ground and over night if possible.
Don't forget to inspect your balls regularly, keep them in a well lubricated dark place The End
