I don't like making negative posts, cos I like it when I have nice stories and info on D3's, but having spent a lot of time at my dealer recently the workshop super was telling me about 2 D3's that they have had to do engine swaps on.

One was under 10k miles, and the owner (although warned to) had not checked the oil level @ all, engine had run v. low and siezed. So just goes to prove how much it can eat.

Second was blowing coolant (moisture) into the exhaust, not just the condensation you get on a cold start. LR wanted the engine & gearbox intact and undrained to suss what the problem was. They put the owner a new one in, but the dealer had the full body off the chassis to do this.

A D3 looks strangely skinny that naked. (sorry no pics as no camera that day)

I bought Castrol GTX Magnatec 5W/30 from Halfords. Used about 5.5 litres for an oil & filter change. £25 for 5 litres if I remember correctly. I also used Magnatec in my Jeep Cherokee, which I had for over 100,000 miles, and the engine was still excellent at that mileage.

Just had mine service @ 15,000 miles and I received a 1 litre bottle of oil with the instruction to check it regularly as they tend to "use quite a bit until they've been run in".

Just checked mine... getting paranoid and its fine... oil use-age seems to drop off the older the engine gets. Only needed 1/2 litre last week after not checking for a while.

Done 24,400 miles now.
