I had my letter last week and booked into Stratstones on Thursday. Unfortunately my towball lock has siezed and although I have the keys, I cannot remove it. The dealer checked it and informed me that they can't put the guage in until the towball is removed and they would have to charge me for removing it - probably by smashing it! They also told me that the reason for the recall was because of the cross member getting distorted by towing trailers with too heavy a nose weight, which sounds quite different to the letter that is copied at the beginning of this thread. Sounds like they don't know what they are talking about (nothing unusual there then!) My towball has a lot of play in the mounting, it fair rattles, but without being able to get it off, I couldn't replace it. I have been spraying penetrating oil into the lock mechanism for the last few days to see if I can get the keys to work again. If not, any suggestions? I know that you cannot publish alternative methods of removing them. I am sure that they are trying to con me to pay for 'smashing' the towball off, but don't know where to go from here.

To Paddler,
A new lock from the dealer and they should explain how to remove it.

Tow bar recall
Hi all,
Had my car in for two bar recall this week. After checking they said it was ok and just fitted a new lock. I explained I tow a caravan but they still said car was fine, just keep the bar off when not in use.
Surely if these bars have the potential to pop out they should replace all of them?
Thanks

Towbar recall- advice please
Hi all,
I booked my car in at the dealers last week for the towbar recall. I explained i towed a caravan. After the inspection I was informed that all i needed was a new lock (which they fitted) and i should remove the bar when not in use. They inserted an information sheet into my hand book and an information tag onto the towbar. Is this acceptable?
thanks
Tom

That's what happened to mine, no wear was detected ( Which as the detachable tow bar had only just been purchased & been used a couple of times was not unexpected). Given the all clear and information sheet supplied. I am satisfied.

Further to my earlier post I realise that removing the multi-height attachment and leaving just the centre bracket with stabiliser bars would not raise the lowest point or offset and therefore not improve the departure angle, though it would provide slightly less of a ground anchor when it does plough.2016 D4 Landmark SDV6 (Euro6), Zanzibar (late run D4)

On the multi-height plate There is an embossed image of a jaw & pin hitch with a cross through it.
Is it really forbidden to use a tow pin hitch with this 'heavy duty' towbar?2016 D4 Landmark SDV6 (Euro6), Zanzibar (late run D4)

The jaw and pin coupling can be used on the multi-height towbar but only in one position. The symbols show that it cannot be used with the drop plate nor in the lower position without the drop plate. The approved position corresponds to 450 mm with a tow ball so it will be a little lower with the pin coupling.

if they have a tendency to wear, and some are failing and some are ok, then surely there should be some periodic inspection of the non replaced ones.
They may not be in a condition to fail now but could be in the future with a little more useThere is no I in team, but there are five in Individual Brilliance

Hi everybody, not sure if this has been asked before; are all D4s in this towbar check program as I phoned LR today and was told ours is not in the range to be checked. Our tow hook is from our D3 so now 8 years old and not the ratchet type, unsure if they are correct and, if it's not in the program, whether to still have it checked anyway.Any advice much appreciated.
Many thanks,
Adrian

I thought all D4's were included, I've had a letter for my 2010 model, so I'm sure yours should be included.
This reminds me I need to book mine in, when I can face seeing my dealer again.Andy
