I took my MY06 Disco 3 to Hunters Land Rover at Brock, near Preston Lancashire on Friday 21st for the check and they were excellent, they even washed it and hoovered it, which given the colour of it was very much appreciated.

In the words of the service manager, my towbar "Failed spectacularly" so they have booked it in for 7th September for the replacement cross member and towbar. this suits me fine as I am having a operation on my knee a couple of days before hand so I won't be able to drive so they are going to collect it and deliver it back once it is done.

I am all for complaining about poor service but am also happy to give credit where it is due.

There are stories on-line where horseboxes have come adrift and horses have, allegedly, been hurt. Not seriously, thankfully, in the ones I read. Had the trailer hit an oncoming car... Sad

Like Nevil Chamberlin said. I have in my hand a piece of paper. To put in the service book. No faults found.
I also handed over my wheelbrace to ge given to Land Rover. It broke the first time it was used.

Ok guys, went to land rover lewes today, got towbar checked, they told me the cross member and tow bar have failed, and do not tow until fixed, they also told me that i had to have a fixed multi towbar!!! i told them i only tow 3 times max a year and that i did now want an ugly thing like that on,i was told that was the only option! which i refused, asked for customer care number and rang when i got home, the guy said there would be no problem Wink so mew detachable swan neck and cross member on its way Very Happy ,i was also told that i may need to sign a disclaimer as regards anything going wrong if i have one of these fitted Question i asked him do all owners of newly bought D4 or RR have to sign these, he said no so i will be doing the same, Thumbs Up

I've just had my tow bar letter, quick question, I have a MY10, the vehicle had a detachable tow bar on it from new, I bought the vehicle a year ago and was the 1st person to use the tow bar Smile The tow bar is as snug as it can be and I only stick a bike rack on the back, do I still need to get this checked as I'm sure its fine?? Are they replacing anything with a better part or is it just a check? I suppose they give you something to say its been done which may be handy.

They still want to check it so they can then wash their hands of any future problems. They'll stick an addendum in the handbook telling you to use it only occasionally and remove it in between. Thumbs Up

If your detachable tow bar fails they'll fit a fixed multi-height like on page 34 of this thread. Thumbs Up

Not always, some get detachable + new cross member, I was just seeing if they had improved the parts. Thanks anyway.

From what other people have said, you have to dig your heels in if you don't want the fixed tow bar, because replacing the cross member is a much longer, more expensive job. Thumbs Up

Apparently the locking mechanism was improved (with a ratchet) some time between 2004 and 2009 but, to the best of my knowledge, they are still fitting the later one, now. Thumbs Up
