I've just bought a 2009 HSe which has a non LR detachable tow bar fitted. Is this letter just for LRs with tow bars fitted or all or all vehicles 200-2009 are being recalled?

Guessing that I bought my car as second hand i wont get this recall? As its an 04 plate.

Interesting with yours being an 04 plate.... the letter states 2005 - 2013 on Discos Sad

Not sure where that leaves you Sad

I am hoping it includes me. alot of sites say 2005 onwards. Im guessing they do that as there is the change from discovery 2 to discovery 3 during 2004. So to save confusion they say 2005. Other then me who has an 04 plate and is confused whether or not i am in the bracket Rolling with laughter

2005 to 2013 refers I suspect to MY not registration date & as understand it, the earliest D3 is a 2005 MY

If they find its at fault and replace with a fixed tow bar do they then keep your detachable tow bar?

Am I reading this correctly? JLR will inspect the detachable towing device and if it, or the chassis member are worn they will fit a permanent towing solution? Or are they going to fit a permanent towing solution regardless as a belts and braces approach?

They kept mine but no big loss as it was defective. I guess they need to return the old ones to prove the work was done.

Just called the old TH White in RWB. Booked in for Friday for an hour. They check and measure rear chassis member, if all is ok and within tolerance you get a supplement for your service portfolio. If not they replace with a fixed towing solution.

First I've spotted this thread. Looks like will have to remove and inspect. That's if I can get it off as been in place a few years now. Actually glad I left it fitted as a guy ran right into the back of me at the broxburn roundabout recently. No damage to the disco but his number plate was on the ground and his grill and front in a mess. Poor bloke was on his way home after just buying the car as he's pranged his last. Refrained from the obvious comments as he was a bit upset.

Afternoon all

My previous concerns about the removable tow ball were well documented on a previous thread, at which time a number of members were effectively accused of scaremongering.

http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic105414.html

Despite being registered with three main dealerships (one for purchase and then two for servicing) I have not received a letter from JLR relating to either the first or the second/reinstated Service Action on these units.

In the past 17 months both of the dealerships I have used for servicing had been asked (by me) to check the wear on the tow ball and cross-member (as advised by Pete at LRCS), and had in turn advised that it was OK (despite almost 25mm of lateral play in late December). One of these checks was carried out two weeks after the first Q393 was issued, and I was charged for it in the servicing. Since then I have towed for less than 1,000 miles.

This week I had the car serviced again and was told that they would be checking the tow bar as part of a 'recall' by LR (ie the Service Action). Without any notice or discussion the removable unit was removed and a fixed multi-height LR one was fitted, albeit at a ridiculously low level given that the vehicle is regularly used off road (the minimum height of 350mm, whereas up to 500mm is possible)

Whilst I take some comfort from the fact that JLR have finally accepted that there is an issue with the removeable unit, this is tempered by a feeling of disquiet associated with (a) different actions being taken in neighbouring countries at different times, and (b) the inefficiency in the way that they appear to have carried out the Service Action, both natinally and at a local level.

For example, if I had gone outwith the main dealership network for the most recent service (120k) I would have been unaware of the change in the JLR stance (other than via this forum of course). Not an issue for something minor perhaps, but the prospect of a tow ball failure is associated with somewhat more serious consequences.

Anyhow, off to spend the next hour or so trying to reverse the multi-height bar and raise the height of the tow ball assembly Rolling Eyes

Forgive my ignorance, but is that the same locking mechanism as on the detachable tow ball: the green lever? Does the new tow bar locate in the same (supposedly worn?) recess in the cross-member? I can't see any sideways bracing arms on the new unit, but are there any Question Edit: ah, on a bigger screen, now. I can see the side arms that save the day. Thumbs Up

Mmm

Just got my D4 MY2014 from the dealers after inspection, and will be calling them tomorrow again.

I do quite a bit of towing (plant) and explained this to the dealer as well as informing them of noticeable play in the fitting. To my surprise they have only replaced the lock, however more worrying was the "update to owners manual" reducing permitted nose weight to only 150kg from the previous 350kg Confused

I have 4 LR products all partly purchased because of their 3500kg towing capacity and capabilities and now if I follow the minimum of 5% recommended "nose weight" the max Trailer gross has been reduced to 3000kg and only 2000kg should I choose 7.5% nose Crying or Very sad

Surely JLR cannot change the towing capacities without rectifying the problem?

Cheers Andy
