Not according to the handbook ..and yes I'm lucky enough to have a dynamic weighbridge on site for axle/gvw checking. Reason this is a concern is that VOSA are very "hot" on trailers/weights etc in Scotland and I ain't risking either drivers/operator license or my own TM CPC

Exactly what I was told by my dealer and as per the hand book for my MY11 D4. LR Discovery 4 XS pulling an Airstream 532 Caravan also own (since new) a 1996 MGF

....well had my towbar inspected today, apparently a clean bill of health All they kept insisting is that it's removed when not in use, when I explained that I use it every weekend to tow 2000kg of caravan and that I wont be removing it for 4 days only to put it back on again I was met with the blank look and well that's what it says!!! They seemed to spend more time trying to find other thing's to quote me for rather than discuss my concerns over the towbar!!
I also note that it now states that the breakaway cable should not be looped round the towbar, this has now thrown up another issue in as much as my cable is too tight to connect to the recovery point and the clip to my knowledge is not suitable for direct contact on the crossmember? I appreciate that this is not particularly LR's fault but it still brings in the fit for purpose thought's!!! Rant Over!!

I always put my breakaway cable into the loop between the tow-sockets. As that's the cross-member I consider it perfectly secure.
I think they mean don't drop it over the actual tow-hitch. Morris Dancers: Drinkers with A Dance Problem

That's the next step, and your right as simple as it sounds, however more cost, a 4-5 hour round trip to the caravan dealer dragging the van, it really starts to put LR ownership into perspective, and I know I sound petty

Do you mean the clip won't go through ?
Very odd because I've got a 'heavy duty' cable on mine and the clip goes through easily and I clip it back over the cable. Morris Dancers: Drinkers with A Dance Problem

The clip goes through fine but it's just too taught, as Tanglewood says longer cable required!!

You can get a breakaway cable for about £5 and it does not really require a dealer to fit it for you.
Also, it only take a couple of seconds to remove the detachable tow ball and put it into the boot and even less to refit it.
I cannot see that either of these issues makes the tow ball unfit for purpose.

Seriously, get a cable with what looks like a large 'key-ring' fitting to go on the handbrake link. I bought one with a closure that would have needed a hydraulic press to close it up. Morris Dancers: Drinkers with A Dance Problem

Dave, you are correct in the cable part that is now a by product of an Issue I never had before, this is mainly my annoyance on having to sort out that issue!
However the fact that I now have to remove the towbar no matter how much time it takes does make me question along with a few others no doubt on its suitability, I will be one of the unhappy camp sitting opposite the happy ones, but that is the way of the world.
