Thanks, Blue. Point taken!
Anyone in the Stoke-on-Trent area with a fault reader that could help a brother out?
(I'll secure a fine pack of oatcakes and a hot mug of coffee for anyone who can oblige)

After Discomikey confirmed my glow plugs were not going to come out easily I invested in a FBH remote control.
Today was -2 with me and half an hour warm up and car starting fine. Hopefully this will be a good solution for the winter ahead.
And as other say car is cosy and de iced when I pop in with my cup of coffee

Thanks Johnny.
How much fuel does it use?
Think it was worked out at 23p for a 30 minute burn
Might get my timer fitted this weekend. 13 months after buying it My D3 Build Thread

I think you'll find it cost more than 23 pence for 30 minutes. By my calculations it's closer to 70 pence for 30 minutes. It's still not a huge amount though Freelander SE 2005 Auto.

I presume it is significantly more efficient than running a great big dirty engine, but are there any ideas as to how much fuel it uses?
0.6ltr/hour
0.6L p/h - 0.3L in 1/2 hr
Current fuel price is £1.22 per litre
1.22 x 0.3 = 36.6 pence
Not sure where 23 came from, it may have been 33 previously... My D3 Build Thread

Is there also an argument that you won't use quite as much fuel in the first few minutes of running because the engine is already warmish? I might have dreamed it up entirely but I thought a cold start used more fuel than a warm start?

Probably cheaper than that as the FBH will have to do less to warm-up the vehicle post-start when compared to a start without pre-heat.
FBH pre-heat can still confuse the ECU though and make the start sound like a bag of spanners.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Actually thinking about it. If you don't preheat the engine with the FBH before starting. The FBH will fire on starting anyway. So it will be using the extra fuel anyway and you don't get instant hot air!! So preheating with the FBH costs almost nothing.Freelander SE 2005 Auto.

It will cost a little.
A Diesel engine only heats up under load, when driving
The FBH would not run for as long if it came on at first start up, as the engine heats up quicker while driving, than only using the FBHMy D3 Build Thread

Why wouldn't J@mes' start with the FBH remote?

The FBH only warms the coolant; the glow plugs directly heat the charge in the cylinder and supports the ignition through the afterglow logic.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948
