Strange Noise - 'squawking' on throttle lift [inc video] |
|
Hi all,
I've been browsing here for months and now that I have finally bought a 55 plate D3 I have a reason to post
So I've had it for a month and its going back to the dealer I bought it from this week for the rear air con pipes fix.
While they have it I want them to investigate a weird and annoying noise I keep getting...
They had it to investigate the air con a few weeks back and failed to hear anything wrong but I hear this noise all the time, although its not constant, i.e. not with engine speed etc.
So a consistent way to reproduce the noise is - while actually driving:
- Drive car for about a 1 mile if starting from cold
- Accelerate to moderately increase speed (from around 20 or 30 mph)
- While accelerating lift off the throttle
- Notice rather annoying, maybe metallic, 'squawking' noise from engine area for about 1 second
- Press accelerator again to maintain road speed and notice same noise (albeit shorter in length) on pick up
To really hear it you have to:
- have windows down
- drive in built-up area
Though with no radio on etc you can hear it with the windows up.
I can actually get it to happen for as long as I want, almost, it I lift the throttle to ~1500 rpm having started to accelerate up a slight incline.
As its hard to describe the noise its been heard to recoginse it from other posts on the forum, one post that sounded similar suggest it might me the UJs on the from drive shaft?
Also note that the AC has no gas in it at present, so maybe it could be related to this?, though I'd have though that would have produced the noise while reving the engine in neutral - which it doesn't.
BTW - its a 55 plate Diesel HSE Auto.
So does anyone have any ideas about what this might be?
If its something on the way out I'd rather fix it now.
Plus its almost embarrassing driving around at the moment, at least with the windows down!
Hopefully this link to a video of it happening works....

Let me know if it doesn't.
Cheers,
Lee

Welcome to the forum Lee.
Not sure about the noise, but would be interested to know where you bought the car.

I don't think that Queens Park Garage are particularly experienced in servicing Discoveries.
It might pay to have a good "indy" check the car over before you go back to Queens Park Garage - try Mark West at West 4x4:-

OK, thanks I'll give them a go if I need to after this next round
Before they took it to a local expert 'Pete' who I think also took it to Terry of "T Johnson Land Rover" - but that was mostly for the air con investigation...

All I can hear is a metallic rattle sounds like front suspension. The squark you mention and the times it happens co inside with the turbo dump valve operating have you checked and put a drop of oil on the linkage they get very dry and eventually seize. D4

thanks gensetsteve.
Not sure about any suspension noise - at least I've not noticed any knocking over bumps etc....
I can just about change the oil so I'm not sure where to start with finding the dump valve linkage?

Find the turbo on the side you will see a rod with a solinoid looking thing the rusty moving bit needs a small squirt of 3 in one or engine oil. D4

I have the same noise, however my vane linkage is free moving.
The noise can occur either as you lift off throttle or pretty much constant at 49mph and low load.
I have oiled and worked the linkage again just to see if it improves but it still does it.
I have had a few months ago the P132B-00 (2F) Turbo/supercharger boost control A performance error and limp mode after giving it some beans on the motorway.
Not able to replicate that error any more though.
Otherwise it is all running fine with good mpg.
Any ideas? (Remap, EGRs Blanked,Silicon I/C hose) from BAS, (Torque Convertor, Compressor, FL Wishbones, Alternator) by WD, Belts by Newbury4x4, Megaflush+extra cooler by GRGB, Diff+Transfer oils, ARB Bushes, Fuel filter, Fixed Towbar, Remote FBH.

Yep, that’s almost certainly the Torque Converter! Mine does the same!
Even new TC can make this noise, you’ll get used to it

Mine was replaced with a new gearbox and tc but still does it. You will get used to it The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything;
They just make the best of everything they have.

Had it on mine (2006 HSE Auto) - replaced torque converter and prop shaft, no transfer box fluid and hey presto - no noise
