Hi. Im a member on rrsport forum but first post on here. Left this a bit late  but going to view an MY08 D3 tomorrow morning and its got a manual box. Any thoughts, problems etc I should know about? Will be used for towing around twice a week. Any help much appreciated.

I have a manual, excellent vehicle, excellent control, it's a drivers car rather than auto gokart, you can fit cruise control as well, so if you like a knob go for it

I've got an 06 manual I've had since new. It's done over 200,000 miles and worked hard all its life.no gearbox problems at all Original Owner.
Mods:
RRS modded grill- Narpy.
De tango'd lights- Beanie.
EGR's blanked -Flack
LED's allround.

My 57 is a manual,
No problems in last 75k miles, only my opinion but more control than an auto

I went specifically looking for a manual when I got my '55 plate D3..... It just had a new clutch and flywheel fitted at 66k miles....worth checking for slip on your test drive...
While I prefer a manual,I didnt tow with it,and I'm led to believe the auto is superior for towing.

I've hot a 55' manual, only noticeable quirk is that it is sometimes difficult to select reverse, looking on the forum it appears to be a common characteristic. I overcome it by putting it into 2nd gear first, it then goes into reverse with no issues. Other than that it is great! 57 Defender 110 XS TDCi

I've got a manual gearbox and it's perfect.
Similar to yourself I tow a trailer several times a month.
I find the manual gearbox is quite high geared in 1st and reverse in normal high range when trying to manoeuvre in tight or awkward spaces with a trailer on.
I actually find it easier to select low range and use reverse(which can be a little to slow) or 2/3 in forward gears while manoeuvring around. I find I can usually get the parking of the trailer inch perfect,
I find that if I'm in high range, using 1st and reverse while I'm shunting around I generally need a couple of attempts to park the trailer!!  Hence it then takes longer! A bit tortoise and rabbit.
Using low range for shunting will also prolong the life of your clutch so it's got to be good

Love my 08 manual, only issue is occasional issue getting to reverse as well Iggy/Ieuan

Big thankyou for the replys guys. General feeling seems to be I should be ok then. Will take it out for a good test drive. Just had a £1k + service at a good indy so not expecting any nasty surprises.

Better performance, better mpg, the discerning choice. I think my manual is quicker off the mark than a BAS mapped auto (yes, I've driven one).
1st to 2nd can often be a bit notchy on some of them. No problems engaging reverse here, mind. Mine spends most of its life in 6th cruising at 70mph on the M3. 2000rpm at 70mph in 6th.
Would recommend you change the gearbox oil before the LR recommended interval, though. 150,000 miles and 10 years is far too long for any car, IMO.

Mine is a '55 manual, currently 60k on the clock, no issues. Again I specifically wanted a manual, but in retrospect, an auto would probably have been ok.
I think it depends on how easy you are on your clutch. Although it's a roughty-tuffty beast, I understand the clutch doesn't like abuse. I did 107k on a clutch on my 300tdi D1, and it was fine when I sold it, so am fairly gentle on them.
Drive both, and see which you prefer. CGA

Mine is an 05 S manual with 155k on the clock. It has a remap, Allisport IC, deCat and I use it to tow.
I love my manual and it has never let me down and Its one of the reasons I've kept it over 9 years.

Interesting you should have used that word ....my clutch was replaced by the dealer just before I bought it....the reason on the paperwork was "driver abuse"....I made sure I didn't hurry changes,and always fully depressed the pedal "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool,than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

05 manual 90 k no probs regular tow twin axle tintent and its faultless but would say if you do a lot of round town I think the auto wins out ,or if your a Girl  MY05 SE D3 Manual my first LR what a car
