great suggestion. i have read a number of threads which suggest something is simple, but i dare not have a go without first of all being shown. reading something is fine, but i find that those little gems of info sometimes get overlooked, or when you do something yourself following instructions, something crops up that does not fit the text. As robbie suggests, simple things like checking battery and alternator. lots of threads recently about possible preventative maintenance of replacing battery and alternator given some have had failures. lots of advice on the thread, but I have no clue what to do to check my D3 electrics are ok or about to give up the ghost. Also, brake pads, servicing etc. lots on here suggest pretty simple to do, but i would not want to try unless I had someone demonstrating it first. I may not even try afterwards, but would value the lesson anyway to understand what is being done by others. it would give me a sense of value and whether I maybe being ripped off - i.e. when I recently paid over 200 to my main dealer for rear brake pads Big Cry completely and royally scr Censored ed over.

For those on the forum that are the experts, it would also give us the opportunity to meet in person and build up a rapport which should ensure them more work in the future as there will be lots that are beyond a diy job, like my belts job coming up soon.

finally, meeting up with other members to know the art of the possible. lots of mods on here and its nice sometimes to meet up to see what others have done.

good idea - as farmer boy suggests, happy to contribute, enjoy the banter and a pint afterwards. even a camp.
thanks B

Think we could be on to something here. We could have a group lesson. With the expert giving some theory first then overseeing the practical as all the novices carry out the task if you know what I mean.

Cheers

farmerboy,

your idea sounds like a plan to me. All it would take is a workshop that is not in use at the weekend, a field to camp in, a technician who wants to make a few bob on the side and of course a nearby real ale pub. I'm definately up for it.

Razz no - but sure I will soon!!!

If there is enough interest I would be happy to "host" an event - I have a fair bit of indoor "garage" space and a field that could be used if anyone wanted to "overnight" (camping / caravan). It would have to be in the Spring when the fields dry up a bit (clay soil around here so very wet and sticky).

Would need a volunteer to "do the work" and a car that is broke and needs fixing (no problem with that methinks Laughing ) - not sure what sort of thing would be suitable - are we talking something like "parking brake service", "EGR blanking", "fault code reading" etc.....??? I can volunteer my motor if required.... if it all goes pear shaped at least it will be at home!!!
We can have a bonfire and drink copious amounts of ale.. or go to the pub.. whatever..

Just thinking aloud really.....

Does anyone know how to do a "sign up" thing just to gauge interest? No commitment either way - just so see if anyone would want to attend..

1st priority may be to find someone who knows what they are talking about and experienced with a set of spanners and does not mind being gawped at!!!

Anyway... it might be worth a try.

forgot to mention - I am about 5 mins off J8 M62 - the one next to Warrington Ikea..
