Practical "how to fix it" days...

Just a thought....

The D3 is a wonderful vehicle but it has more than its fair share of issues Big Cry

This is a very active forum and appears to be graced by a number of very knowledgeable and experienced mechanics (technicians?).
A lot of information is freely passed on to grateful members and the use of videos and photographs is very helpful.
The wiki has made a good start at cataloging common "how to's" which are easy to find.

Maybe a series of more "hands on" events would be popular?

Not sure how it may work but maybe advertise a series of common repair events where an experienced member demonstrates the job (probably on a car that actually needs it doing!) whilst others observe, make tea and offer encouraging banter. The whole process could be videoed and made available via the wiki. Followed by pub lunch and "whip round" for the "mechanic" and "host"?

Possibly combine with a camping / caravaning weekend. (I recall that at least 2 members who where on the Old Coach Road trip had farms or some land)

Is it a daft idea or would it work?

Good idea farmer but most of the jobs that are 'DIY-able' already have a 'how to' on here somewhere created by some of the extremely clever people who frequent this forum.Videos would possibly help but some people just don't feel confident enough to tackle certain jobs even with a guide to go by. Just my 2 cents Thumbs Up

I think it is a great idea.

From some of the stuff I have done with other forum members it is amazing what little snippets you learn from each other. Simple cheats to get the access required, correct tool selection, how to recover things when things don't go to plan and some hard-earned sympathy!

There are many out there that have never been shown how to do 'simple' checks such as battery and alternator testing. Like all simple things they are only simple once you have been shown.

I'd look to help, contribute or make tea.

Thumbs Up

Live demo of a disco_mikey body off for example Laughing Laughing Laughing

It's a good idea in principle however I favour asking our resident experts here and paying them for there time and effort, whether it's getting advice from the guy's on what the fault is, ordering parts and getting parts advice from Nick to mikey carrying out the diagnostics, labour and know-how to keep it running sweet.

My capacity to actually fix mechanical or electrical faults is somewhat lacking compared to others and will end up breaking the car so would never step up to attending.

I would be very interested in one of these events. I think it's a great idea.

Although I would most definitely be a tutee.

I would be all in favour of making sure that the "mechanic" was suitably rewarded £££££. It would certainly have to be a "sensible" arrangement that could be sustained. May even discourage DIY ers when we see what is involved!

For those that are willing to work on their own cars it's a good idea, as Robbie says knowing a technique and which is the right tool to use can make the difference between a job being relatively easy or an absolute nightmare Bow down
