EGR Blanking Differing Views
I visited my local LR Independent today to order a new key (£145 including pairing)
I took advantage to pick their brains regarding Discovery 3's, pointing out I was soon to under take a road trip covering some 3k miles some of which will be in very unpopulated areas and my Disco has yet to have been blanked. I have a bas blanking kit and was going to do it before we set off but have been delaying simply because my Discovery runs so sweet and economy is just where I expected a 3 ton house brick to be. And I'm a bit of a 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' kind of guy.
To my surprise he was dead against blanking. Saying a good no holds barred 200 mile blast down an unrestricted section of a German autobahn will be a lot better than blanking my EGR.
He also started to explain they have a way of cleaning EGRs whilst in-situ, but before he could elaborate he was required in the workshop.
I have searched but regarding EGRs it's a bit like reading war and peace, Twice!! So thought best to ask for peoples views. At the moment I'm favouring not blanking and taking my tool kit and the blanking kit with me to cover both bases.
So what's the consensus of opinion?Discovery 4 HSE

Blank them. Fit and forget
Remember, your indy will make more money cleaning/replacing EGR's every x,000 miles. Once they are blanked, they will never cause you any more issues My D3 Build Thread

Touting for business was my first thought, but this guy really is old school and I just think he was of the opinion blanking did more harm than good on newer LR diesels. I was going to ask his reasoning behind this but issues with an old Freelander called him away unfortunately.Discovery 4 HSE

I'll bet my left arm, there are more people on here that say EGR blanking is a good thing, over those that say don't do it (apart from the EU4 members) My D3 Build Thread

Go outside, and disconnect the inlet system after the EGR inlet and see just how much has built up and is being fed into your engine.
Once you've seen it you'll agree that blanking them off and letting your engine breath clean fresh air has got to be a good thing.

Mikey, am I dreaming when I say that I'm sure I've read somewhere on here that you were looking into blanking the egr valves themselves, as opposed to the traditional method of blanking the outlet pipe? flickr

Don't shoot the messenger guys I'm aware of the heart bypass theory of blanking I was just curious as to why someone with many years of Land Rover experience would have a different view. I don't think it was purely to try and gain business because he knows me from old and I've never given him any business I use them because they have a good selection of parts at reasonable prices.
So consensus is there are no down sides to blanking.Discovery 4 HSE

For the purpose of balance.... without EGR your engine will run hotter ...your oil will be hotter ...your turbo doesn't like hot. 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Must say, after blanking my previous 55 plate D3, I did not see any difference fuel consumption, certainly was not any better. Put 80,000 on before trade in, anyway what I observed.

Assuming you're a non-smoker, think back to what it felt like to be sat in a smokey pub/club before the smoking ban was enforced. EGR valves force your engine to passively smoke the exhaust gases that get produced during the combustion process (in the name of burning off more of the crud to prevent it from entering the atmosphere).
EGR valves are not cheap things to replace and they are only going to keep getting more expensive from Land Rover.
Blank them all day long and consider yourself lucky that you can.

I have a MY2009 and I understand that they cannot be blanked without having a warning light on
however I seem to remember a member was working on this.
