Advice please.

Hi all,
Pretty new to forum but have used all the advice on here to help diagnose and fix things on my d3.
I'm looking for some advice regarding a drone type noise on my d3 but can't find anything on it so I'm wondering if you great people can advise me ? When driving my d3 sounds perfect but if the (abs) or (tc) has to kick in then there is like a drone type from around 2500rpm and upwards. This noise stays until the engine is switched off. When restarted its back to normal. I have to use a single lane road for school run so often have to pull off onto grass/mud to allow other cars passed. Is this normal or am I looking at another large bill. Also I would like to say thanks for all your advice on gear box judder. Dr Tranny has done it again, 10 min job this morning THANKS.

Dave

P.s it sounds like its coming from the front of the car

Could it be a wheel bearing?

Jack up the front and see if there is any lateral play.

I had something similar and it was a very broken bearing on mine.

Hold the wheel at the 12 and 6 o'clock positions and see if there is any play, if so its a bearing.

Wheel bearing

Hi all, I have looked at the wheel bearings on both front wheels as big dave suggested but they seem fine. No movement at all, any more ideas. I was thinking breather for front diff Confused If the diff is under pressure would this cause a lack in movement of the oil. Just a thought Confused

I have similar symptoms. My drone seems to be on overrun, it can't be heard over the engine noise while accelerating, but once I lift my foot of the accelerator there is a drone like a distant aircraft. Get the tiniest, barely perceptible feeling through the front of the car too, seems most intense around 80mph. I took it to dealer under warranty to re balance front wheels as I originally thought it was that, but it made no difference, so it is back there first thing tomorrow morning. I have told them I suspect the front diff, based on what I have read on here. Will let you know what they come up with.

Have you done the front diff breather pipe upgrade.

I think it was a TSB last year.

Get the kit from TLO takes about 5 minutes.

Might help if the front diff is under pressure.

OK so dealers had the car on the ramp yesterday after me taking the mechanic out for a spin to hear the noise. They diagnosed that the front diff was on its way out. They will have it fixed for tomorrow hopefully. Good service and no messing from Kentdale Land Rover, so a Thumbs Up for them. Might be worth getting someone to have a look at yours if breather upgrade does not work?

Propshaft centre bearing. Still a pricey job but could be worse. Also had all wheel bearings checked and cv joints ect while it was in. Propshaft now on order for Monday, back to garage Tuesday. Thumbs Up
