Smoking like a train
About a week ago when reversing out of the drive and trying to pull away I had little to no power. I thought it's the EGR's so thought blanking them would help. I drove it for a few more days before attempting to put the blanking plates on. I noticed it was gutless and smoking under load.
So today I removed the pipes and fitted the blanking plates and took it a spin. Initially I thought is better it was back to the way it was when running fine. That was until I got on the the motorway and it never wanted to kick down and it was smoking like a 2 stroke diesel train. Hardly any power and just no good.
I am a bit confused about the whole EGR blanking process, I read about the full removal and the fitting of the full blanking kit. I only had the to cheap plates which left the other end at the chamber with to holes. So I blanked those with 2x 2 pence pieces. Is it something I have done or haven't done? Would I be better with complete removal, haven't read the fault codes but I will try to this week.

Have you checked the intercooler hose?
It can delaminate internally.

I did have a look when I come home as I thought it could be maybe off, looked ok but that's not to say it is.

They often have a split which may not be all that obvious until its under pressure, try squeezing the hose at the top left as you look into the engine bay, that seems to be a favourite place and would give you the smoking symptoms as BD says

I had a similar situation develop on my TD5 when blatting down the outside lane - blacked out three lanes of the M6 in seconds. As Big Dave suggests, it was blistering on the inside of the hose. We burst bisters to get us moving again, but could only use very gentle throttle else the pipe would collapse. Finally limped off the motorway and managed to get some tin foil, with which we then made up a temporary pipe using some sheep fence wire as the inner core - good enough for 300 miles that day before managing to collect a replacement pipe from Lix Toll Currently 2009 Disco 3 SE, 2013 MY D4 HSE and 2016 D4 SE

I had the same symptoms. I blanked the EGRs with the full kit but that didn't cure it.
It turned out to be a split in the intercooler so the turbo was just blowing to atmosphere, same as if the hose had split. About £150 for a new one I think.
Mine are only blanked at the top of the valve to pipe joint, they only need the pipe blanking in one place, blanked is blanked the pipe removal kit doesn't achieve anything more just a clean look.
It's also worth persevering to remove the plenum chamber butterfly to give better inlet airflow
Reason I ask about the ESF is that a sticky turbo actuator linkage gives the no power and smoke you describe, but usually an ESF message too Altox GSM FBH controller thread

Greg no messages was kinda hoping there would be. Operation hose check in the morning, had 20k trouble free motoring out of my old tub there
And not that I think it's related well I hope not, but the passengers side blowers are blowing cold. Anything from 24 down is like the air con is on. Drivers side is fine take it I need to try a re-calibration of the HVAC system.

There was a hole in the bottom of the intercooler pipe big enough you could have put your hand in

Makes you wonder what happened to the bit of rubber that was there. Would it have taken a flight through the manifold and back out through the exhaust or do you think it's more likely it would have been forced outwards, away from the main flow of air?
Out of interest, what mileage has your D3 done and do you know if this is the first intercooler hose to fail on yours?

When you do replace it worth thinking about the heavy duty silicone hoses, like the one BAS do.

Yep - going to fit mine at the weekend (even though the original rubber one is still good after 100k miles!).
EDIT: Well, I *think* it's still good. I guess I won't know for sure until I remove it from the car. I wouldn't be surprised if I find blistering and a general breakdown of the rubber on the insides of it.

Agree - when we finally replaced the fence wire and foil (see above) with HD replacements they were superb (compared to both original and the temporary bodge) Currently 2009 Disco 3 SE, 2013 MY D4 HSE and 2016 D4 SE
