What did D3 and D4 bring over the RRS and FFRR, just 7 seats, but isn’t that the point for a family car? Be able to carry anything, tow anything and go anywhere in comfort. The D5 still does this and probably better than any other car out there too.

I think the D3 / D4 had higher practicality over the the others than the D5 does. The large boot space with big access, split tailgate etc. The D5 has lost some of that and thus is closer to the RRS/FFRR in the practicality stakes. Only the extra 2 seats really mark it out.

^ I agree. Thumbs Up

This £80k D5 feels much more like a RRS or lower budget FFRR with 7 seats than it does a D3/4.

The only thing I have noticed in terms of lost practicality is the "squareness" of the boot, so I cant get big square things (like a washing machine a while back) into the boot (was about 1" too big so had to lie it on its side to get it in), but the boot is longer than than the D4 (I know from getting a front door in the back) I have had all 7 seats occupied and they are all better than the D4 was for space, leg room and comfort - in mine the middle row seats recline as well if you want.

I thought I'd miss the split tailgate, but actually havnt as you can get much closer to the boot space without having to "reach" in. The side cubbies on the D5 arent as big as the D4, but there is a lift up lid and space under the floor, so most of my stuff (towrope, jumpleads, ODB reader, warning triangle, 240V inverter, compressor, etc) that were in the cubbies now fits under the flap in this space.

So in daily use it does everything my D4 did, only a bit nicer, if that means its more like an RRS or FFRR is that a bad thing?

I think both the Disco and the RRS lost some practicality when they went to an aluminium "monocoque" type design (i.e. when they lost the body on frame design). Certainly the space below the row-2 seats was lost. I've got loads of stuff under the seats that I'm not sure where I'd put in a newer RRS.

The need to use the rear frame around the boot opening to provide stiffness to the rear end of the chassis means that both ended up with smaller, less practical boot entries albeit the D5 does still do pretty well. The new Defender appears to suffer the same issue but with the added issue of the side-hinged door requiring a big chunky pillar to carry it.

RRSTDV8 - dead right Thumbs Up

I need a decent loadspace for a large cage for my dog, plus space for guns & luggage for 4 people.

The D5 doesn't do it, I'm just hoping the Rivian R1S or full EV version of the Defender 110 will work.

Quote:
The Rivian R1S is based on top of the so-called “Skateboard” platform not unlike the body-on-frame layout of regular trucks.

Hopefully this means a really decent rear door.

@RRSTDV8:

I like the new Defender, but picture loading / unloading, parked on the side of a busy road, especially a narrow one:

1. Will it always be safe to open the door that far and have the spare wheel hanging into the traffic? It wouldn’t be so bad if the wheels were narrow, but many of these are likely be specced with wide, drug dealer style, alloys.
2. In order to be able to load from the pavement, when another car is within 6 feet, will LR reverse the hinge side for LHD cars?
3. Even if they do, what happens if you have to park facing oncoming traffic?

Reminds me of fitting barn doors to a MINI...

The original designs of British cars have never been changed here, at least in the sense of opening doors

Big issue with the new Defender RHD models is the off side rear lights appear to be obscured by the spare wheel when the tailgate is open.
Wouldnt want to have a breakdown and open the tailgate in a dark country road.
Reason why the addition of rear lights were fitted to the bumper of the old Disco.

I would also question if the tailgate fitted rear lights on the D5 are also obscured when the huge one piece tailgate is lifted. Question
