I have used both the tunnel and the ferry.
From Calais to Caen it's around 100 pounds for fuel and tolls
So that's 200 pounds on top of the 300 if you are going towards the west.
Add the stop on if you are travelling from the north then the price difference between ferry and tunnel starts to fall.
I have just paid 700 for August with twin axle and two 4 berth cabins. If I don't have the cabins it drops to five hundred ish.
So having tried both I would rather use the ferry to Caen from Portsmouth, few beers, some sleep then arrive with a much shortened journey on the other side. Just my opinion
The prices for the tunnel have just come out this week for August next year and comes in at £326 for D4 with caravan includes £32 for a dog - I can understand charging to bring a pet back into the country but going out no one does anything so god knows how they can charge £16D4 2010 HSE Santorini Black

To answer your earlier questions Dubbs, the discount as a member of the property owners club is 30%, plus you get discounts on the cabins and food on board etc. If you take a morning sailing from France, or an afternoon one from UK you get a cabin for a nominal amount (£5 this year I recall). Night ferry is always the most expensive way of doing it because the cabin has a food allowance built in and they tend to be booked up.
I'm sure several of us could offer you our guest of member code; this will reduce your cost by 10% - the member gets a small reduction off their renewal the following year, not a percentage of your ticket price. You don't need to be a property owner to join (called Club Voyage on the BF website), but there is a one off joining fee, then an annual renewal fee. 30% off the prices you've quoted will more than cover this.
Our place is in the SW of France and I agree with you about reduced driving time on the Caen side, especially with the kids. The Calais route is cheaper, but it does add several hours onto the time and you would probably have to negotiate the Paris peripherique too going that way. BF do have an Economie route to Le Havre too, but the boats are not the same spec as the ones which normally ply the Ports-Caen route.

Ferry crossing does break up the journey and it's an adventure. I haven't been on a night crossing for long time but I do remember going to Le Harve years a go on a midnight crossing and loads of people had sleeping bags and air beds and set up camp in the lounge and restaurant. Then there were the people who bought a crate of beer in duty free and played cards all night IID PRO
