ZF 6HP26 Automatic Transmission Metal Pan with Filter |
|
My first post . Hello to all and thanks in advance for the great posts you add everyday to this site. It's really a great read for most problems once can experience with the LR.
I have about 70K miles on my LR3 SE and after reading all the posts regarding the transmission, transfer case and rear/front differential, I have decided to do a fluid change for all above list. However, I would like to ask you how difficult it would be to change the trany pan and do a complete transmission oil change. Additionally, would anyone have the part numbers for the metal pan and filter so next time around I can do the trany oil change and filter change without removing the pan? Which fluids are compatible to what the manual specifies?
In your opinion should the pan change out be done by a ZF indy shop or is it a DIY? I have seen a video on youtube for a pan change out on a jaguar which has the same transmission layout and it seemed not a major task as long as the necessary tools are available. If I've read the post correctly at some point one needs to lift the transmission/engine? to get access to the fill plug. Is that a major task?
Your thoughts are greatly appreciated and thanks in advanced!

Highly reccommended mod to fit steel pan and seperate filter. Had mine done by ZF and would suggest you try them. The job is certainly a DIY one but ZF have all the right gear, particularly when you get to the oil pumping part. Don't have record of the part Nos but it is same parts for BMW X5 so should be well known to all ZF depots. They (ZF) will also use their oil - Lifeguard 6, which is same spec as LR but considerably cheaper. One bonus when fitted is that 4 1/2 litres of oil can be easily changed + the filter doesn't have to be changed very often. I change 4 1/2 L every 30 000 Klm - I think this way I am keeping a reasonable quality of oil in the box. Also fitted seperate oil cooler to the gearbox oil - this way I now have seperate systems for g/box oil and cooling water mix. Life always good with a Landy

It goes where others don't.

That Paddocks link is to the plastic sump though ?
I found that the cheapest way to get the metal sump kit shipped to me was from these guys :
JP (Automatic Transmissions) Ltd
www.jpat.co.uk
The kit (pan, screws, filter, gasket) is appr £170 + VAT. This turned out to be a lot cheaper than ordering it from a local ZF dealer in Sweden. Also got the Lifeguard6 oil from JP.
I did an initial flush with a cheaper oil (Ravenol 6HP) about 5000 km's ago, now just need to find the time to fit the metal pan and filter....

Hi all,
I hope you can welcome a Norwegian guy that needs some assistance
None on the Norwegian forum have experience with the steel sump, so hopefully someone here can assist.
I just bought the steel pan conversion kit (BMW X5 type) for the zf6hp26 and have a question related to something i found on a forum somewhere about reduced fluid capacity with the steel pan:
"Keep in mind that you are losing app. 1 liter on your transmission fluid capacity. (More frequent fluid changes required) The fluid level has to be checked with the overflow plug in the pan, not the trans housing anymore. If the filler plug in the housing is used to adjust fluid level, the trans is overfilled by app. 1 liter and will overheat-fail".
Where is the logic? It says I'll loose 1 liter but will overfill with 1 liter if I adjust fluid level with the filler plug in the housing?
Is this correct for the steel sump pan? What is the correct capacity/fluid level check procedure?
Don't want to put this on without knowing for sure what is the correct procedure...
There is a white plastic thing attached to the top of the oil drain plug - I assume this should be there?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Unfortunately I can not help you on this one, however I am very interested myself as I just ordered the metal pan-thing myself.
What I heard from the Dutch dealer is the length of the supplied bolts with this metal pan is too long so you probably need shorter bolts when you want to assemble it.
I hope someone else can help you (and me).

The filler point is underneath - the white plastic thing is over the filler point - you need to aim the fluid over the lip otherwise it will fall back out again
Its a very large plug you need to undo.
It's not a job I'd do myself - too much to go wrong.
Bristol Transmissions do a kit, including oil and a revised electrical connection - basically revised oil seals. Mark.

changed to metal pan filter around 6 months ago, good news is that all yer have to buy in the future is the paper filter at around £25.
have got a forum discount is yer mention disco3.co.uk
ps you'll see they have sister dealerships around Europe
BTW only think to remember is the gearbox temp has to be right which can only be done using diagnostic kit so would be main dealer or someone with the right kit
if yer scroll down the page towards the bottom, metal pan filter and also a service kit complete with oil, bolts etc.

You have a plastic one unless you have changed it for a metal one.
The plastic ones have the filter integrated into the sump making it expensive and awkward to change the filter (so nobody does). The metal ones are easily removed and have a cheap filter which can then be renewed when the fluid is refreshed.

i bought a used vehicle, so i have no idea if the former owner has changed the pan.
is there any difference you can see?
if i touch the pan, it feels/sounds like black painted aluminium.
but i am not sure and i woul like to avoid scratching the surface
just for checking the material....

Metal pan is smooth, plastic one has fins - but you can only see if you look underneath from the middle of the car from the transfer box to the front - or take off the transmission shield (Standard one is plastic and made of cheese) Mark.
