repair electric handbrake - cheap fix
my handbrake started the squeaking and failed last week
i had to pull the remote cable to release it and then it would not work at all
i was able to remove the cover for the unit whilts still in place and remove the broken gear
as expected the gear had spat the circlip off the end
the fix was very simple - a 13mm nut screwed onto the end !
i have replaced everything and have a question
the handbrake will now engage with no shrieking - but the fault remains and it has to be removed by pulling the remote cable
do i need to clear down the ecu fault to get it back in action
if this works out we have a cheap and simple fix for our handbrakes

My handbrake squeals sometimes if I use it when the vehicle is in low range. Works fine when in high range.

Col,
It applies a bit more torque to the shoes when in low range, so I'd say you need to adjust the shoes ASAP otherwise it will just do it all the time.Bodsys Brake Bible

the reason it squeals is because the circlip comes off the end of the gear and the motor over revs

Mr Bodsy is spot on
If it squeals in low range, its not far away from screaming in high rangeMy D3 Build Thread

just wanted to let everyone know that my EPB is back in service working fine
there were 2 problems
1. the circlip had come off the gear
fitting the nut on the end fixed the problem but the spring tension was too strong. So i cut part of the spring off and it works great now
2. the parking shoes needed adjustment
once the unit was wound backwards i clicked the adjusters till the handbrake started to brake and then came back approx 6 clicks
it was a cheap fix but was a pain in the ass to do
i removed the spare wheel
jacked car up
removed rear wheels
removed bracket for ebp module
turned ebp round
removed cover
repaired gear
rewound mechanism
all whilst lying on the ground covered in ants !
wanted to thank everyone for the useful information especially simoniz who had just done this repair and gave me some guidance
(i reckon somebody should do a video so we can see what needs to be done - if i have to do it again i will get the camera out !)
